Australia first became concerned in the Vietnam disagreement in 1962 when the Australian administration sent a team of 30 military advisers to help out train the South Vietnamese military intended for its fights against the NLF guerrillas. Only three months later the Australian prime minster Menzies announced the commitment of another battalion to help the USA in South Vietnam.
The entrance of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam throughout July and August 1962 was the start of Australias participation in the Vietnam War. Australia became involved in the Vietnam War because Australia felt exposed by the extension of communism. Various people inside Australia believed that if South Vietnam became a communist country, extra countries would soon follow. Some Australians saw what was experience in Vietnam as a threat to Australias security.
