The article, “The New Life Surge” by, Sarah E. Sylstra discusses the efforts that have been made and are being made to gain more people to join the pro-life debate. This article goes into depth about the laws that are trying to be passed as well as the laws that have been passed and what it has done for the pro-life debate. Moreover, I will discuss my rebuttal to this article as my opinion stands for pro-choice.
First and foremost, let it be known that I am pro-choice. I feel very strongly that girls and women should have the right to make decisions regarding their bodies and circumstances that may occur to make these emotive and harsh decisions. However, I do believe that there should be a demanding circumstance that would severely damage or devastate the people involved. Thus, this brings about my rebuttal.
The author of the article is obviously pro-life, although I question the credibility. The author Sarah E. Sylstra, introduces a women named Katey Tryon. Katey becomes pregnant as a teenager and with the information from a pregnancy center decides to have the baby and then giver her up for adoption. She then goes onto college and becomes pregnant again and once more has the baby and gives the baby up for adoption. According to Tyron, “My life and the life of my unborn baby were forever changed the minute I called for help”. The author depicts the womens story as a reason to be pro-life, when in actuality it says nothing about why her decision was the right one. It gives no facts and no real supporting data as to how this was the better decision. Giving up children for adoption can be mentally damaging to the mother as well as the child later in life. Moreover, it seems as if a teenager or young woman in need of counseling and help making a decision whether or not to have an abortion should not contact a pregnancy center. Laws are being passed for pregnancy centers to display that they do not offer abortion services. This discourages a woman from even seeking help. I feel that the story of Katey Tryon is irrelevant and misleading.
