Alexander the Great
On July twentieth, 356 B.C. Alexander the Great was born. His Father was Philip, the
King of Macedonia. His mother was Olympia, daughter of the late King Epirus.
Alexander was quite mature for his age. At 13 he started learning from Aristotle, he was
trained with other children. It was at this time that he met Hephastion, his future best
Friend. Aristotle gave Alexander training in rhetoric and literature and sparked his
Interest in science, medicine, and philosophy, all which became important later
In his life. When Alexander was 14 his father was going to purchase a black stallion.
The horse was to wild and no one thought it could be tamed. Alexander decided
That he could do it and leapt onto its back and started a sixteen year relationship
with the horse. He named the horse Bucephalus At the age of sixteen his father made him
regent , with the power to rule in his fathers name. While his father was away ,one of
the colonies revolted. Alexander quickly marched troops to the area. Also at 16 he
founded his first colony and named it Alexandroupolis. At age eighteen Alexander
was left in command of the left wing of the Macedonian army at the battle of
Chaeronea. The battle was won thanks to a cavalry attack led by Alexander.
Alexander never got along well with his father, he had always been closer to
his mother Olympia. Philip and Olympia did not get along well because she was
non-Macedonian. The family split apart when Philip married a women named Cleopatra
a Macedonian. When Philip divorced Olympia Alexander fled. He was allowed to return
but remained isolated until Philip was assassinated in the summer of 336 B.C. Alexander
ascended to the throne at age 20. Soon after that he took the title Alexander the Great.
In 335 the city of Thebes revolted and Alexander stormed the city by force taking 30,000
as slaves. He could never dominate force in this as long as Darius the Persian ruler was
alive. After beating Persia the second and last time in 332, Darius had managed to
survive. He fled to the mountains and was later killed by Bessus his own nobleman.
With Darius out of the way Alexander was crowned king of Persia and became known
as king of all Asia. Alexander began his war against Persia in spring 334 B.C. by
crossing the Hellespont with a large army. Alexanders forces defeated the enemy and
lost only 110 men. Alexander entered Egypt in 331 B.C. He founded some 70 cities
in the lands he conquered and ordered the named after himself. The most famous is
Alexandria which is located at the mouth of the Nile river. In spring of 327 B.C. his
Army marched into India Invading Punjab. The greatest battle in India was against Porus.
On July 326B.C. Alexanders army crossed the river to meet Poruss forces and defeated
them. In this battle Alexanders horse Bucephalus was wounded and died. In 11 years
from 335 B.C. to 324 B.C. Alexander and his army battled their way across 22,000 miles.
Alexander started to lose some of his power. The troops wanted to go home but
Alexander kept pushing them to conquer more. Once when Alexander was drunk he
Fought and killed his friend Clitus. At this time he lost the trust of his already unhappy
troops. A lot of Macedonians started to dislike him. This was caused by his adoption of
Persian ways. He was pulling together a vast empire but the Macedonians felt they were
losing their leader. After all this, Alexander still had much of his power but soon it would
be taken away. On June 10, 323 B.C. Alexander the Great, the Macedonian king and
great conqueror died at the age of 33. The actual cause of his death is remains unknown
They embalmed him and placed his body in a gold sarcophagus which was taken to
Memphis, Egypt. Later, taken to Alexandria, his final resting place. With no successor
Named on his death bed, his empire went to generals and officers who would then
Become governors of sections of his empire. Soon after, Alexanders empire crumbled.
