tree planting isPROJECT SUMMARY
Early cities, towns (the capital city of Dhaka is situated on the bank of river Buriganga, and the historic Sonrgaon is also on the river side) and villages have grown up on or near the rivers because people use the river water for their everyday purposes. People need water to drink and to grow food. They use river for transporting people and goods.

Early general and specific livelihoods (fishing folk, snake charmers) around Bangshi like many others were, dependent upon the river, and agriculture, a river dependant job, is the major source of employment in the country (68% of employment). However, during the 1990s, the government polices to accelerate the countrys GNP to create more employment meant a large industrial zone called the export processing zone (EPZ) was set up at Savar near the river Bangshi. This industrial zone along with other local industries began discharging all of their industrial waste into the river and other open water bodies. Industrial waste should not be dumped into the rivers or water bodies. It is understood that these industries need another option to get rid of their waste. One such option is using Effluent Treatment Plant )ETP to normalize and filters the waste water so clean water is returned to the river and any excessive waste is kept in safe containment units. Industries are also able to invest, when it is required, in new technologies to ensure production complies with international environmental standards.

As a result health, environment, general and specific livelihoods of the river area were completely changed in a negative way. In addition, these changes facilitated a cultural shift within the country.

PROJECT RESULTS
Rivers and human lives are interrelated and interdependent. Polluted rivers mean we no longer have fresh fish to catch, eat, and sell, or land for agricultural production. We no longer have clean air to breath or diverse species of wildlife to make our rivers unique.

No longer is it a question that human life will not survive in a healthy way without the preservation of our natural resources, such as water. When communities, government, industry owners, and individuals come together repair their water sources, all will benefit. The community (i.e. the fishers folk and other occupational groups) will reclaim their livelihoods, poor women in particular will be benefit and their lives will become healthier. Ecology and biodiversity of the area and the river will be restored leading to true sustainability.
