Experiment 1(A)Title: Features of Elements, Compounds, and Mixture. Objective: To observe the properties of elements and compound in the mixtures. Procedure: 1. Samples of 4 elements iron (Fe), sulphur (S), mercury (Hg) and magnesium (Mg) were prepared. Examined the elements and the observations were recorded.2. Mixed the iron powder and the sulphur powder. The appearance of mixture was observed and tested with a bar magnet. Observation was recorded.3. Iron (II) sulphide was prepared. The appearance of the compound was observed and the iron (II) sulphide tested with a bar magnet. Observation was recorded.4. The result of observations was recorded. Results:ElementPhysical StateColourLusterIronSolidBrownDullSulfurSolidDirty greenDullMercuryLiquidGreyShinyMagnesiumSolidBlackDull 1. (a) Describe the appearance of the mixture of iron and sulphur. The mixture of iron and sulphur are in powder formed. Iron is brown in color and sulphur is dirty green in color.(b) What effect did the bar magnet have on this mixture? The bar magnet only attracted the iron powder.2. (a) Describe the appearance of the compound FeS.
The compound of iron (II) sulfide is in solid formed and brown in color.(b) What effect did the bar magnet have on this compound? There is no effect on the compound while using a bar magnet to observe. Conclusion:The element or compound in a mixture can be identified through separation by physical means. (B)Title: Study of a Mixture and Its separation. Objective: To observe the properties of the components that separate from the mixture.Procedure:1. The sample substances carbon powder (C), magnesium powder (Mg) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are prepared.2. Used a spatula to place small amounts of each substance into test tubes.3. Added 1cm of deionized water into each test tubes.4. The test tubes were gently shaken and the contents have been dissolved was recorded.5. Poured out the water from the substances that did not dissolved and added 1cm of 6M of HCL. 6. Prepared another heat resistant test tube. 2.0g of unknown mixture was weighed and added into a heat resistant test tube.7. Added 2cm of deionized water and heated the mixture to dissolve the water soluble-material.8. After heated the mixture, the liquid from the un-dissolved solid was separated by filtration.9. Collected the filtrate in a heat resistant test tube and evaporate the filtrate to dryness by heating.10. Slowly added the 6M of HCL drop by drop to the residue until had a reaction.Results:1.SolventCarbon PowderMagnesium PowderSodium ChlorideWaterIIS6M HCLIIISoluble= SInsoluble = I2. (a) Observations upon evaporation of the water filtrate. There was white residue remained.(b) Observations upon adding 6M HCL to the residue on the filter paper.
