Monsters are on the rise, it seems like we just can’t get enough of these horrific creatures. Our world is filled with movies such as Monster Inc. and Monster House. Maybe the reason behind the increase in monster culture is because the anxiety in the post September 11th Attack that devastated the American community. Some say it could be the conflict going on in the Middle East, or how about our downfall in the economy for the last decade. Exploring the true meaning behind all these monster movies, followings, games and even apps. We will follow, explain and try and connect two pieces of writings that are from too different periods of times but both have the same collective similarities, one being Frankenstein a story about a monster created by a scientist in the most unnatural of ways. The other writing Prometheus, an ancient Greek mythology story about a god beyond the rules of the gods.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, starts out with the basic instinct of curiosity. Curiosity is what drove the character of Victor Frankenstein to create a monster later he would reject. Victor spends late night after night working towards an answer for his creation, he finally comes across a major breakthrough in his work, “ After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue , I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life; nay , more, I become myself capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter” (Shelley 28). Victor now filled with excitement now begins phase two of his two part project, building the physical human body.
