LeadershipEssay Preview: LeadershipReport this essayLeadershipDefinition of leadership and how it differs from management.Leadership and management are two words that are commonly mistaken; the relation and the differences between them are often unclear. Leadership can be defined as „the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or a set of goals.” Managers are there to plan, organize, lead and monitor employees activities. Leaders also have to be able to guide an organization through change. As we will see later, vision is a crucial component in the success of this task.
Basic theories on leadership. We can divide the theories that deal with leadership in 3 chronological groups. First were the trait theories. Until the 1940s, research in the field of leadership was dominated by these theories. Second came the behavioral theories which were very influent until the late 1960s. Finally, contingency theories are the most modern theories about leadership.
Trait theories.Trait theories are „theories that consider personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from nonleaders.” Early results aimed at confirming this theory were inconclusive. Many research studies were conducted and each identified key traits supposed to differentiate leaders from nonleaders. The problem is that they didnt get the same results, thus failing to discover common traits, which should have shown in each research study. When applying the Big Five Personality framework (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience) to the study and research of leadership traits, results were more encouraging. They showed that the most important trait for leaders was extraversion. Still, this founding should be mitigated. Extraversion seems to be a crucial trait in getting leaders into leadership positions or being recognized by others as being a leader but isnt necessary related to effectiveness in the long run.

Finally, the Big Five theory also has the good fortune to show that being highly effective gives more credibility to individual traits, which is why, in this study, we used “socialization of leadership traits” to distinguish the dominant leadership. This gives people with strong personal and social norms experience more impactful effects of leadership as a group with the best socialization of leaders which also benefits non-leaders.

This paper draws on the results of a meta-analysis of 577 personality personality traits to evaluate their predictive power, power to be influential, and role for the personal development of a leader. Based on these findings, we find that, when using different Personality traits, individual personalities have more predictive power, a more positive influence, and greater flexibility.
The Big Five Theory has led to a more scientific understanding of leaders. If we study leader quality, social traits, and personalities more closely, it can be demonstrated that:

This work in collaboration with the Global Leader Network for Leadership, a non-profit organization that engages in global engagement between leaders, is in response to public support for leadership training and an increasing knowledge of how to engage with members at different levels of the organization. It is also the authors’ responsibility to inform and encourage those in leadership training that are interested in joining the group, to educate others on the relevant skills and expertise of leaders like me, the Big Five, etc. While this is no guarantee I am sure that many of these ideas or conclusions will prove helpful to leaders practicing this field, I do hope that it will help them better inform them of the key insights and processes of leadership training, help them develop their own views on the issue, and help them choose the best candidate for leadership training.
In this paper, I want to draw the light on how human behavior, how the brain constructs and forms memories, can influence the choice to seek leadership training. I focus on the Big Five Personality (bilateral) approach as a theory, focusing on the factors that enable leaders to change their behavior in accordance with their personal expectations. The Big Five model also examines the role of interpersonal factors in human motivation to succeed, motivation to change behaviors and influence others. The basic idea is for leaders to try to learn these principles and techniques in order to better interact with others. This approach is based on the Big Five Model. The role of interpersonal factors has changed dramatically over the past few decades, but it remains an active topic for future research.

Finally, another trait that was identified by recent studies is emotional intelligence. The point is that if a leader doesnt have emotional intelligence all his other skills and qualities such as, competence, experience, excellent analytical skills, vision, etc. may fail to have a positive influence on the people he leads. Central to emotional intelligence is empathy and „the caring part of empathy, especially for the people with whom you work, is what inspires people to stay with a leader when the going gets rough. The mere fact that someone cares is more often than not rewarded with loyalty.”
Behavioral theories.Instead of focusing on personality traits, behavioral theories focus on the behavior of effective leaders. This distinction is very important because if behavioral theories proved to be true they would mean that people can be trained to become better leaders, in contrast to the trait theories, which assumed that characteristics that made the difference between leaders and nonleaders were given to an individual and couldnt be changed, thus leaving organizations with the recruiting process of selecting the right leader as the only tool towards effectiveness and little hope for any improvement.
The most famous behavioral theory was developed by the Ohio State University. It basically identifies two categories of behavior associated with effective leaders:
initiating structure and consideration.Initiating structure „refers to the extent to which a leader is likely to define and structure his or her role and those of employees in the search for goal attainment.”
Consideration is „the extent to which a leader is likely to have job relationships characterized by mutual trust, respect for subordinates ideas, and regard for their feelings” . We can note that the consideration dimension is similar to the empathy part of emotional intelligence discussed in the trait theory, thus suggesting it is an important factor since it is evidenced and common to both approaches to leadership.
The second behavioral theory was developed by the University of Michigan. It also identified two dimensions in leadership behavior. Those dimensions are employee-oriented and production-oriented.
Employee-oriented leaders favor interpersonal relations, take personal interest in their employees needs and accept individual differences among members whereas production-oriented leaders focus and insist on the technical, operational and task aspect of the job. The findings of the University of Michigans research show that „employee-oriented leaders were associated with higher group productivity and higher job satisfaction [whereas] production-oriented leaders tended to be associated with low group productivity and lower job satisfaction.”
Once again we have a dimension (employee-oriented) which is very similar to the emotional intelligence factor of trait theories and the consideration factor of the Ohio State Universitys behavioral theory. Although no formal connection has been demonstrated so far, its worth bearing in mind that these elements are consistent with three major theories in the subject of leadership.
Contingency theories. The main concept of contingency theories is that leadership styles should match the situation of the company at any given time. Five major theories have successfully isolated key situational variables.
The Fiedler ModelFiedlers contingency model is „the theory that effective groups depend on a proper match between a leaders style of interacting with subordinates and the degree to which the situation gives control and influence to the leader.”
The first step is for the leader to identify his own leadership style through a questionnaire developed by Fiedler. Basically, depending on how good or badly a leader describes his least preferred coworker (LPC), he will be categorized as relationship-oriented ( in case of a good description of the LPC) or as task-oriented (in case of a bad description of the LPC). The assumption of Fiedlers model is that Leadership styles are fixed in an individual, leaving no room for training or counseling. The only option is to match the right leader to each situation.
The second step is to define the situation. According to Fiedlers model there are „three contingency dimensions that [] define the key situational factors that determine leadership effectiveness:”
