“Bernice Bobs Her Hair” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a short story about a girl named Bernice who goes to visit her extremely popular cousin Marjorie. All of the guys want to socialize with Marjorie, but not Bernice. Marjorie tries to help Bernice become popular, which makes Bernice get carried away and she tells everyone she intends to bob her hair. Marjorie knew that Bernice was bluffing and calls her out in public. Bernice gets caught up in the moment and bobs her hair in front of her friends that day, which ends her popularity. While Marjorie is sleeping Bernice decides to get revenge and cuts her cousins hair.
I really enjoyed this story because I think it teaches a good lesson and it has an unexpected ending which was different. I did not care much for the main character, but I felt sorry for her that she felt pressured to change. There is a lot of anger and jealousy throughout the piece. It is shown in the way that Marjorie pressures Bernice into doing something that Bernice did not want to, and Marjorie not liking the outcome. This feeling that they both need to be popular leads them to a lot of jealousy.
I think an issue was confronted about how things can go wrong when people have to go through peer pressure to change things that are not actually necessary or important. I think that peer pressure is a common thing that everyone has to go through, but I also think almost everyone participates in it without realizing it.
