1. Lt. Henry- Protagonist, American solider in the Italian ambulance service, does not like the war, gets injured, deserts the military

3. Rinaldi- Very good Surgeon, Henry’s roommate and best friend, watches out for Henry, ladies man
4. Ferguson- Catherine’s nurse friend, jealous of Catherine and Henry but helps them out
5. Count Greffi- Really old man, 94 years old, friend of Henry who he plays billiards with, throws the best parties in Milan.
6. Emilio- Bartender who is friends with Henry, helps him to escape from the hotel and arrest, sells his boat to Henry to allow him to escape
1. Rain- Catherine is scared of the rain because it gives her the feeling that someone is going to die. When Henry goes back to the front, she makes him stand out of the rain when she drops him off at the train station. Also, during the whole retreat, a grim time for the Italians, it is raining.
Their major forms of transportation are carriages. There are a few cars and during the retreat, a few airplanes fly over. The ambulances that Henry is responsible for get stuck in mud really easy and require a lot of maintenance. When they escape, they do it in a row boat, and not a motor boat.
The novel is written in first person point of view. This allows us to know what Henry is thinking and his opinions on the war and other topics. It gives us his view of the others in his eyes.
Captain Henry at the beginning of the story is a strong man who joined the war to help his motherland of Italy. As the book goes on, he is gravely injured
