During my major course of studies at the University of Phoenix, I had experienced a professional dilemma. The dilemma occurred approximately three years ago between me and my best friend Brian. The events that occurred were shocking and have tainted our relationship forever.
Brian and I had been best friends since High school and shared similar interest. We both loved computers and had jobs in the Information Technology Field. In August of 2003, Brian lost his job and was looking for employment in our home town. After several months Brain gave me a call to see if there where any jobs at the hospital, were I was working. I told Brian about a system administrator job and put in a good word for him. Brian received an interview quickly and receives the job.
Several months went by and everything seemed to be working out for him. Then I was pulled into our Security Information Office and questioned about my friends ability to hack into computers systems. At this point I was placed into a situation between my employer and my best friend. Based on my ethical perspectives, I had to let my employer know the truth. This ethical perspective goes back to deontology, ” Deontology posits the existence of a priori moral obligations, further suggesting that people ought to live by a set of permanently defined principles that do not change merely as a result of a change in circumstances.” (Wikipedia, 2006). Just because my circumstance was between losing my best friend or seeming unethical in the eyes of my employer, I had live up to my principles. After pondering the question, I told my employer that my best friend was very capable of hacking into systems. My employer than told me that Brains personal computer had been seized and he had been let go because, they had found hacking tools on the PC. Brain, found out later what went on and he has not spoken to me for over three years now. He has felt betrayed by his best friend and could not understand, why I told them the truth.
In the Austin American Statemens it stated, “If you dont stand for anything, you dont stand for anything. If you dont stand for something, you dont stand for anything.” (Mcnamara, 2003). If you do not stand for something and can not stand up for your perspectives, then you lose your credibility and honor. Even though, I knew this would evolve losing a friend for the rest of my life.
