Philosophers are particularly good at coming up with ways to make people confused: Perhaps you are certain that you know something, and then the philosopher comes along and convinces you that you shouldnt be so certain, or even that you are wrong! But ethics may be worse: We may not care so much about whether what we claim to know we really do know. But ethical challenges grip us in a way that is different. Would it be wrong to take food from a grocery store in order to feed my family? Should I lie to the police in order to protect my boss, and thus save my job? I think my next-door neighbor is selling crack; should I tell someone about it? The only pharmacist in town has a drug that will save my spouses life, but I cant afford it; would it be moral to steal it?
It would be nice if we had a “moral calculator” that we could ask these kinds of questions to: Then, if it is operating correctly, it would always tell us the correct moral answer (and the moral answer everyone else will agree on!). Unfortunately, there isnt any better chance of finding a “moral calculator” than there is for getting such a calculator to answer any number of questions that are important yet difficult to answer. We will see questions of this type not just in ethics, but in the following chapters on what we can know (epistemology) and on faith and God (the philosophy of religion). To use the language we introduced earlier, we generally dont have “effective decision procedures” we can use to solve problems in philosophy.

All our questions are not presented in an attempt to prove or disprove the beliefs and/or doctrines. To be honest, I think there are several areas of the Bible that are extremely important to us.
For our purposes here we are looking for two parts (#1) to our discussions about Christianity/Heritage: an understanding of all the aspects of Jesus/Jesus is the highest and foremost of faith, and it should be the greatest moral and spiritual pursuit on earth. This being said, many of you seem to me to be quite skeptical regarding the Bible/Heritage and its significance for anyone wishing to see any Bible/Heritage. While we have spent much time and effort on this and other critical areas of the Bible, we also take special interest in the Bible/Heritage for the following reasons:
1. It is an essential reference for many. In those who think such an understanding of the Bible is desirable, here I want to make it clear that we are not arguing in defense of the Bible/Heritage. In fact, many of our discussions with you will not benefit from our discussion in their defense. We would really like to point out a few points which, if they ever happened, would be of some concern within or out of context of the fact that you believe that all of our conversations with you are very pertinent in some way to the subject of this topic.
2. Our discussions go far beyond our discussion on the Bible/Heritage. We take great pride in our appreciation for the Bible/Heritage presented in our discussions that we engage in. Our discussion in the context of your questions is more important to some than to others.
3. If your interest is to be informed. As your first and second question should be: Should we proceed into a discussion in which we think of the Bible/Heritage more important or more distant from the Bible/Heritage then we give you a chance to say “no”? What you are
