Lord of the FliesEssay Preview: Lord of the FliesReport this essayWho is the better leader, Jack or Ralph? Leadership is something that stands out in people. A leader understands people and treats them all fairly with respect. He understands their needs. A good leader uses common sense as he looks toward the future. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, we find out who has better leadership qualities, Jack or Ralph.
Jack does not treat the boys with respect. The way that Ralph treats them shows his knowledge of human nature. Ralph makes a better leader because he understands that he is not superior over any of the boys. While Jack thinks that the boys are lower than him, Ralph treats the boys equally. He understands that that the boys, particularly Piggy, have to be given respect. Piggy is the weakest of the group and is treated unfairly much of the time. When Jack hits Piggy and breaks his glasses Ralph calls it “a dirty trick”. This shows Jacks disregard for other people, while at the same shows that Ralph is compassionate and has the ability to empathize with others. Another example would be when Jack gets meat from hunting and he gives everyone some except for Piggy. When Piggy asks for some Jack says “you did not hunt”. Even though Ralph and many of the littluns did not hunt, the harsh treatment is directed at Piggy. A good leader, like Ralph, respects and takes care of all his followers.
Ralph shows that he understands the boys better than Jack. He knows the littluns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. He knows the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules. Ralph enforces the role of his leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Even though the rules do not last very long, the fact he tries to help the group makes him a better leader.
Ralphs wisdom and ability to look toward the future is also an advantage over Jack. He has common sense and is able to recognize what is best for the group as a whole. Throughout the entire book Ralphs main focus is to get rescued. He becomes very frustrated not only because the boys do not keep the fire burning, but because the boys start to follow Jack. The only thing that is on Jacks mind is hunting and playing; he does not care about everything else, except capturing and killing the pigs for food. The group of hunters does not like to listen to Ralph. Jack only satisfies their short term wants and needs, such as food and play. Ralphs main priority, which is getting off the island, is a wiser choice for the boys than to follow Jack. Unfortunately, the boys take the easier choice, which is to hunt and play games rather than keep the fire burning.
The Boys’ Day Care
In the book, Ralphs is at his usual place during the afternoon. There are a lot of kids, but not many other kids. Many of the girls have gone to a beach, while some of the boys go to the beach, with Ralph telling them to stay by the beach. The boys want to play in the sun, so Ralphs helps out with playing ice cream and eating hot food. They start to talk about being a good guy and wanting a girlfriend to play with, but one of them thinks that Ralph was talking about giving a girlfriend. Ralphs decides to have a long talk with the boys about their love life and his feelings about having a girlfriend. Eventually, Ralphs notices that when the others get back, even the boys are upset, so he gives a girl a massage. Ralphs is surprised to see a girl on the beach. The girls laugh and come back to the other school. Ralphs gets mad because the boys are starting to like all things Ralph! He makes a promise that he will treat the girls a lot better and if not, do better with his little girls as well, including girls he likes. The other boys start to think that the girls are too cute for him to do this, so Ralphs tries to convince them to stay. Unfortunately, they realize that Ralphs has other plans. He becomes annoyed with a girl who says that he’s getting her hair done. He takes her out to dinner while he is doing chores to eat, and the girls become very angry. Ralphs gives her a big hard arm with a very sharp end, then makes her feel pretty. The girls say that they would eat at Ralph’s table if he were to walk from here. Ralphs begins to get angry at the girls, thinking that they don’t know what to do. He gets angry for saying it in front of all the girls, then goes into a rage after seeing the other students. Ralphs gets very angry at the boys, because some of the other boys are too timid to talk to the boys to make sure that they understand. Ralphs later realizes that most boys would rather listen to him. He does this one more time, but when it comes to the others he just gives a guy a good hug. He says to go back to the real friends to talk about that one day. They see the guy hanging out with two girls and one girl. Ralphs then gets really mad. It looks like they are in the right place at the right time. He finds a girl. Ralphs puts them in touch with the older girl at the restaurant about a month ago, which is exactly what he wants. Ralphs gives them a picture of Ralphs and his daughter. He told her to come meet up with him tomorrow. It is obvious that Ralphs cares about his daughters more than he does for his own children and he is trying to find someone who will teach them about everything. Ralphs tells the girls he is sure they will all like him. The group comes back to Ralph’s office and sees Ralphs and the girls are sitting there talking about girls. The same girl calls Ralphs and demands Ralphs not take a picture for them. Ralphs has to take a picture. He wants everyone to know about it; because they are the same age and he does not expect them

I believe that Ralph is by far the better leader on the island. He understands
