INTRODUCTION: Biblical allusions can be found within the Native American Iroquois Creation Story and also within European literature such as William Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation. The definition of an allusion is a figure of speech whereby the author refers to a subject matter such as a place, event, or literary work by way of a passing reference, and there are several ways in which an author can use this literary device. The Iroquois Creation story parallels the Biblical Creation Story found within the book of Genesis. William Bradford uses allusion to compare the European explorer’s encounters with the Native Americans to the experiences of the Apostle Paul. William Bradford references Seneca’s voyage as a comparison to the Mayflower. The Iroquois Creation story uses allusion in an indirect manner, whereas Bradford uses allusion in a direct manner, or as a reference.CONCLUSION: Although both written works come from two completely different points of view and cultures, Biblical allusions can be found within each piece.
