The consequences for a wrong personnel selection can directly impact a business, their customers and other employees. One of the biggest impacts for hiring an unsuitable candidate for a business is a financial one (Strong, 2012). The cost for the initial hiring, the termination and the search and hiring of a replacement can be costly to the company and increases the longer a bad employee is allowed to stay with the company. The morale to the other employees is also directly impacted as they are left to “pick up the slack” for the poor performer before and after the person is terminated. This situation has happened on several occasions at my company and the way it was handled varied based on the manager of the department. The one that comes to my mind first is regarding a customer service person that was hired several years ago. She did a wonderful job for the first 90 days but as soon as the probationary period was over, her attitude and work dramatically changed. She was late several times per week, called in almost monthly and was very short on the phone to customers. The manager had sometimes weekly meetings with her but never requested termination. The employee only left the company when she felt she had something that she could and did file a lawsuit against the company. The suit had no merit as was dismissed but the impact on the company and others in the department are still felt today. Employees in this area are skeptical of new hires until they have “proven” themselves capable of doing the job.ReferenceStrong, A. (2012, November 21).
