Unions CaseEmployees join unions if they get mistreated or their expectation from their employer was not met. Tolich and Harcourt mentions in their report the biggest reason employee to join union was that, they wanted to receive protection from their employers, then was the collective contract or improved pays and condition, some joined as they has ideological reasons to join the union, and there were few joined due to they did not want to be an odd one out when rest of their co-workers joined unions. What motivated employees to join union, according to Mark Van De Vall who is a Dutch sociologist. He viewed that what motivated employees to join union were mixture of the personal needs which is split into egocentric or sociocentric. The specific environment which Van De Vall puts it as a crucial feature that will influence the employees decision making on whether they will join or not in union. The image potential members have on unions as well as employers may have a bearing on decisions regarding on union membership. The advantage of being a union member is the power of numbers. Other advantages are increase in wages health care insurance, flexible working hours, overtime pay, pensions and holiday leave. The disadvantage being a union member are, union dues meaning union member get charged annual dues, if unions declares a strike, employees cannot work and will not receive pay check and employees will lose their bargaining power as union have a monopoly over the employees negotiation with their employer. Benefits for the employers with the union involvement is that negotiation become simpler. If the workplace for the employees are unionized it can lower the turnover level and lower the turnover the organization saves business money, not hiring new workers and train them. The obstacles for the employers with the union involvement is that they lose flexibility on setting wages, spending more money on wages and have to spend large sum of money on wages due to employer and employee joined in a legal binding contract, cannot employ subcontractors on indefinite bases to decrease full time employees,
The reason why employees join unions is if they believe that they do not receive what they need or expect from their employer, they often turn to unions in hope that they could help achieve some sort of reasonable treatment. The difference between unionized employee and non-unionized employee is the collective agreement. In non-unionized employees are at the mercy of their managers who changes terms and condition of their employment whenever they want to change it mostly straining employees When employee joins union they have a written legal bound guarantees covering wages and benefits. Collective agreements gives unionized employees the rights and protections (Rasmussen, 2009). In 1999 a research note was done by Tolich and Harcourt they reported the results of their survey to the 55,000 members of the countrys largest union, The
Tolich
reported on the effects of workers’ unions and to the workers themselves. Their results indicated that members and their employers are different, on some issues (most important for health, safety and welfare) the unions are stronger and the union leaders are more aggressive in the fight against workplace corruption. Some of the union leaders in the poll (a high school dropout for example) even did not join unions and did not want the union to stay in place for even a few months (this is clearly bad for jobs, business and social stability). The survey conducted by TUC, led by former Secretary General of the US government, John Holdren said that the union leaders and managers have different ideas and needs but not many of these ideas could be used in an open forum. This is true. If an employee in the company agrees to join an organization (in this way it is much safer and more stable while other employees see that the other’s rights are not fully respected), the employee is probably more open to forming his/her own organization (even if you feel that an open membership could only help to improve his/her life and social stability). The union leader’s views and their work cannot be used in a public forum. But some suggestions for making the change to become safer were suggested on May 16. One of these was that union members take over if an employee does not leave voluntarily.
One could also make a difference in safety to their members with the addition of safety aids (a common remedy for accidents) in the workplace as is being done here at TUC.
The idea of a worker to not join the union as part of a contract with the employer is discussed in more detail below.
I’m not quite sure what kind of safety and safety advice TUC has published on this topic I am looking for.
We did the survey with people over 21 years old and in general are open to ideas about training, and the most comprehensive answer that I could find that covered that concept had the following, The same kind as I’ve given. There are also specific ideas that should be discussed but I haven’t published those yet so hopefully that will be found in time.
The main points have been the same for everyone. It is common for a worker to do some other project or be in a position to change company or job without ever taking that project out onto the market at all. This is not common for the general public at the job market – no one in the U.S. is talking about this very many times, even though people have to agree to it (Rasmussen, 2009)
The benefits of workplace safety and safety and employee safety are very important and can contribute to many things not being done in today’s economy – that is not necessarily the case in workers’ societies. Worker safety is probably one of the most important things to get workers to do for the future if they will leave the workplace at all – that is not only important, but also very important to our future.
There is really nothing wrong with leaving work for a year or two before working so long – that is a reason why employers are doing better nowadays than they were, for example in the early 21st century.
I want to emphasize a few points that have come up in the research this past year that have affected my understanding of the workplace and
