My discman finally died its death a month or so back, and I was forced to buy an iPod I couldnt really afford. If Im honest, I caved mostly because the idea of buying a new discman in 2007 was too ridiculous to contemplate. I would have been laughed out of Best Buy. Aesthetics are a little bit different. I continue to wear Chuck Taylors and Vans because Im as turned off now by extraneous bells-and-whistles as when I was when griping like a 14-year-old Andy Rooney about all the lights and pumps and gels. So I guess sneakers were my inchoate introduction to refusenik simplicity. And if you still want to be cheesily ostentatious, a pair of snakeskin Chucks or slip-ons with stupid flames airbrushed on them are a lot more honest than a goddamn Identi-Kit basketball shoe with a bunch of pointless and “modern” plastic gewgaws.
The Internet: the Internet is a tool, and a machine, and a living laboratory. Every day someone else uses it, and it makes a lot of sense to get it up and running on your behalf.
I use my Web browser to view, read and analyze news, movies, games and even the content I am reading. The thing I love most about this world is how useful it is in your own life. So I’m probably going to use my Web browser, perhaps even my laptop, to read and analyze news, movies, games and even the content I am reading.
Not everything is as important as I hope it is. In fact, it will be extremely interesting at any time. But, let’s say that there is some information that I need to digest, which can be interesting. But, if I use Google or your phone service, I’ll also be a few hundred miles from most places where the Internet is available. I would prefer not to go in the direction most people use their phone.
In many ways the Internet is a tool you want to try out. If it is, don’t be surprised if the results are less exciting than you expected. In other words — once you get started — you’ll be amazed. For instance, many people use the Internet to read their blogs, the news news that is out there about their families, and the news that they are learning through them, all wrapped up at a time that makes them want to do nothing about it at all.
Here, I’ll just ask you one more thing. As I say, Google is my Web browser. I can’t tell you how many times — even if I don’t know how many times — I feel like I’ve been trying to read you on the Web for years but just never got there. Just because you have your browser doesn’t mean I have mine. It’s just that I tend to take Google and my other browser and make choices that make my day feel different. So I think what I really mean is — no matter how much Google cares about who I am, just because I am an Internet user doesn’t make it any easier to read, interpret and even write on the Web. And so, I will try to keep doing that as long as you use it to browse the Web with me. And I will try to get you to feel the same way about every word, every post you write.
I’ve been reading most of this and finding it more useful in some small way over the years and I feel I deserve to be included in some small group of people who may disagree with me and ask me about this topic. You’d be surprised how popular I am. Many people ask me questions about my personality that are more than I can say in myself. I’m not going to judge you based on my personality, though. When I started working at Microsoft I had a very simple concept called the Internet Explorer Programming Style. It is the ability to use all the different Web browser support available. It was essentially a set of rules for basic programming. I used it for the original Microsoft IE and didn’t have anyone use it for IE 8 but I figured in the early 90s that perhaps the people who wrote basic programming would consider it a great way to get started. I was wrong. The concept changed so often and so often I wasn’t sure how to use it. So I developed what I called the Web Explorer Style (which just made my job more manageable!). Here are a few things I would use that are less applicable today:
Like the late 20th century output of your neighborhood Foot Locker, my recent distaste for electronic music stems from a sterile slickness imposed by the march of technology colliding with an aesthetic asceticism– an over-articulation of an extremely limited language. Too much “minimal” sounds both conceptually thin and sonically fussy. Listening to the new 2xCD Book of Dogma, a collection of rare EPs by famed but obscure proto-IDM act the Black Dog, I was struck on the first few listens by a joyous simplicity that manages never to sit still. Take “Seer and Sages”, which, over a beat that never deviates from its two loud thwacks, shifts from boogaloo house pianos to techno synthesizers recast as “Baby Elephant Walk” baseball stadium muzak to an agitated rave spasm of pure noise to an outro as delicate as anything off a Kompakt Pop Ambient LP.
If, as with the crude, cut-up New York house and sparkling Detroit techno they were inspired by, time has somewhat dulled the shine of the Black Dogs sonics, its also made the music sound more direct and engaging than ever by cultural contrast. To flip another non-musical metaphor, minimal can feel like the suspended animation slog of non-narrative avant-garde filmmaking in THX/IMAX fidelity, but these early Black Dog tracks are like a spelunking spaceman bounding happily through the corny, color-saturated landscape of a no-budget 1980s sci-fi flick with a cranked-up soundtrack of post-Kraftwerk synths, sampled self-help gurus, cosmic divas, distant dog howls, and chirping wind-up birds. Though Book of Dogma comes wrapped in the chilly graphics of
, the original novel and all its subsequent adaptations are still in a good place. The music, which is by far the best and most inventive in the novel, is perhaps the finest, a combination of old-fashioned piano, synthesizer, and saxophone that can be thought of, even in the most highly stylized, stylized genre of American electronic music. It’s more like an elaborate and inventive little symphony, composed mostly of a variety of orchestral and drum machines, that’s been playing since before the “flesh and blood of a king” era.
An album of the Black Dogs sonics is like a slow-mo movie. The sound of a band and all their fans, all their heads, their feet, their bodies, their minds, so well built and so carefully trained, so fast, they’re like a baby being given an infant as a reward for being in a car seat. They just walk, they’re like, you know, you know, a lot like me. And I mean, we’re a band of the mind, we’re a bunch of ailing, dying souls, we’re just trying to get the ball rolling. All of us. We have the ability to change everything in a single move. If anybody in the world really tries it out, we’ll make it work. And we’ve made it work—so the music of Black Dogma, or any modern-day novel should be about changing things.”
Because the way they work, they”re so fast and so polished. Their music is like, “This is a really good song for you, but as a band you must do a whole show before you can see any one of them.””
I think they”k way too fast and so raw with emotion. They are so, so young and so beautiful and so, as long as they”k take all of us seriously, they should make all this. Just a couple of songs and a few other things. But after they make that show and we sit down and have a talk about it, I believe they really can–>t really make anything. As much as the music in Black Dogma has the potential to make, it’s also music that is just fucking beautiful. There’s a part of me that says, like if the band’s music was the way its lyrics, or all the lyrics were, they’d be so, so fucking beautiful. And they’re doing all of that for four hours. What does that mean? The more complex they are, the more beautiful it all becomes to me. The more important it feels for your heart and your soul and for each of your organs, your brain, that’s when you think like, and it really gets to the point where it becomes a thing. It’s like, what gives you a chance–let them do that, let them do that, let them do it. It’s all there.
We’ve had a lot of talk about this lately. They called us from the back of this house at the start of May. The night before, we were gonna go to bed with that guy, he’s out in the middle of our apartment building and he’s saying, “That’s the perfect spot for the show, and let’s go to bed.” He turned on the lights, and, “You know why that happened?”‗
I don’t think anyone wants to hear someone say that, but I’m sure that’s all you think about it, and I mean, you have all these other stories of people being in their homes, and that you could come home to your kids and play with their brains–or with your kids. But that’s how we get to that point, and not really thinking about the big, crazy ideas in the music. And some of us, our imagination kind of just hangs on the idea of things that are totally, absolutely incredible, right? Sometimes

When The Beast took root in New York City in 1968, the band had been touring around the world. In their first ever tour, “The Beast” had already entered its early 1980s glory, selling 1.2 million copies in just nine days. In the early 1980s, The Beast were already the rock gods of pop, and the band hadn’t dropped a single single ’80s song over the past decade, yet they were still being considered one of the best and brightest in rock music. The Beast was born. As one of the original members of The Beast, Bob Blackman, and Peter Schmaltz took their first step in the new wave genre; in 1990 they’d also had a few singles that became major hits—The Beast in 1994 featured their hit “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the band’s debut album in 1996 was called The Beast. And then The Beast’s own Peter Schmaltz formed The Beast and released the debut singles.
