This disaster would forever be known as the longest war in history, the united states military made the attempt to suppress the peasant people. Vietnam was not just another war that the United States was involved in, it was a test in the containment of communism for the united States. In 1968 Robert Kennedy came to realize a flaw in the war, he stated that the United States had ” misconceived the nature of the war” (Doc. E). The ending result, is the Vietnam war would come to heighten tensions in the social, political, and economic outlook of the United States during the 1960s.
The movement opposing the Vietnam War gave effect to Black Power, the racial politics, and bounce back of womens movement. The American aspect of the war in Vietnam bothered a growing amount of Americans. Televisions all over the world brought coverage of the horrid pictures of combat in to families homes every night. Innocent people were caught in the line of fire, and villages considered to be friendly to the enemy were burned to the ground. in the end, the Americans missions were more hurtful, rather than winning the war, the US military were growing the population of anti-American people who gave secret aid to the Vietcong. The My Lai massacre sparked antiwar view in the United states. In the massacre of My Lai, Americans were frustrated by the failure to track down the enemy. Shot to death, numbers of unarmed women and children sparked an even more uncontrolled frenzy when learned that the government tried to cover up the incident. As these missions continued, on the other side Martin Luther King Jr. continued to be the most admired leader of the civil rights movements, he believed that African Americans were being overlooked as far as civil rights, the nation was more concerned on foreign issues more so than domestic (Doc. C). In 1966 Stokely Carmichael called out for the African Americans to assert Black Power. The Black Panthers was a group that was formed out of the Black Power, with the ideas to end big political parties that tried to change the world. By the increase of Free Speech that was being practiced students joined the New left. **The New Left was a term used mainly in the United Kingdom and United States in reference to activists, educators, agitators and others in the 1960s and 1970s who sought to implement a broad range of reforms, in contrast to earlier leftist or Marxist movements that had taken a more vanguardist approach to social justice and focused mostly on labor unionization and questions of social class. The outcome of the New Left created observers called the counterculture, this reflected new attitudes towards drugs, sex, and ways of life. Rock festivals became cultural happenings, the most famous of which was Woodstock. It was an upstate New York festival that attracted over 400,000 young people sought out other alternative experiences through drugs and music. Along with the New Left other movements such as the National Organization for Women was founded in 1966. The purpose was to establish equal rights in partnership with men. Unlike the members of the National Organization for Women, radical feminists practiced direct action, as they protested the view of women as servants and sex objects who were pressured to conform to societys expectations.
