The Body ShopEssay Preview: The Body ShopReport this essaySocial responsibility relates to a companys obligation to “maximize positive impact and minimizes negative impact on society” (Pride & Ferrell 2000, p.81). By working with Malaysian Nature Society, Malaysian Aids Foundation and Womens Aid Organization, The Body Shop managed to maximize its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on environment, womens rights and HIV/AIDS and minimize the impact of their wastages on the environment. Most companies adopt the practice of social responsibility with expectations for indirect long-term benefits (Pride & Ferrell 2000, p.81). For instance, The Body Shops socially responsible efforts have not only left a positive impact on local communities, but also indirectly attracted goodwill and potential customers and employees.
Body Shop also extends supports for many social environmental and human rights issues across the globe. The Body Shop foundation is the charitable arm of the company and is funded by the company as well as other fundraising measures. It was established in 1990 with the purpose of consolidating donations made by the company to different charities. The Body Shop was the first community to be bestowed with the Humane Cosmetics Standard for their testing policy that was against cruelty to animals. The company was one of the pioneers in bringing to an end the practice of testing cosmetics products on animals. In 1986 Body Shop allied with Greenpeace to campaign for “save the wheels”. However owing to differences with the organizations, the Body Shop left Greenpeace to form an alliance with Friends of the Earth.
Body Shop claims that all its products are free of animal cruelty and are composed of natural ingredients. The company has a fair trade program that is known as Community trade. This is the lone cosmetic company that has such a program and which shows the commitment of the company to trade in a fair manner. This program is spread across 24 countries and does business with 31 suppliers. This program gives employment to more than 15,000 people in the world. The community trade shows the companys interest to trade with communities that are in need and compensating them adequately for the natural ingredients that the company purchased from these communities. The objective of the community trade is to engage in business with people who are in third world countries.

The Community Trade Program was announced in the July 2014 public comment period with a goal of increasing participation nationally and internationally by a combined 400 people under a voluntary program. The Community Trade Program brings community groups together to pursue the social transformation of the community that is creating conditions of human dignity, and also promote participation of the general public in economic, environmental, social, legal and social policy issues. The program includes an annual conference, which is called ‘The Community Trade Plan’, at the 2016 CIT-USA Conference in Denver, Colorado, to focus on solutions to meet the growing needs of the community in the United States. Community trade programs are very important for health, safety and the environment in which the average Canadian lives, and they address many issues at the grassroots level.”
The Community Trade program is an ongoing effort by industry and the government of Canada to reduce the barriers that protect and reduce the impacts of environmental and health issues related to industry. Although the program is aimed at increasing involvement in the community by an additional 1.5 million Canadians to meet a projected 10%-15% global growth rate, it cannot replace the community trade and sustainable development objectives of more than 50 million people. The program is not intended to replace the industry-wide Community Trade Action plan.

The community trade program is also a critical part of the Canada Climate Change Task Force and the Canada Energy Task Force, which together have been leading the fight for action to reverse the decline in global mean CO2 emissions since the late 1970s. The program was announced by NDP MP Andrea Horwath in September 2014. The Task Force will review issues on energy efficiency, sustainability and climate impacts, and work on implementing a national standard of cost efficiency for all of Canada.

Each year, federal, provincial and territorial governments undertake a variety of collaborative activities to address the economic, environmental, social and cultural causes of climate change. These work are led by the Canada Climate Change Task Force, which will include a climate change assessment conducted in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Public Policy, the Canadian Public Service Committee and other institutions. The goal of these collaborative initiatives is to reduce the impacts of climate change by identifying and reducing factors responsible for rising or falling temperatures in the United States and of developing countries, developing effective efforts to address problems of climate change, and ultimately eliminating or reducing greenhouse gas emissions that reduce living standards in the country. These collaborations contribute to climate change action, are conducted through the Canadian Initiative for Community Trade, and provide ongoing opportunities for Canadians to participate in community trade campaigns, which are generally conducted in partnership with institutions such as the Climate Change Task Force.

Over the last 18 years, the Canada Climate Change Task Force has been working on the Canadian climate change issues, with a large stake in the climate of choice at every decision. In collaboration with other stakeholders, the Task Force will identify and report on climate change outcomes in Canada
PETA: “Community Trade’s Program.” “Faced with a situation where a company is taking advantage of their community trade obligations, and where they have failed to adequately pay, they are moving to boycott this program by sending an email stating that they will not trade in the products of other food companies who don’t comply with Community Trade. As a result, they do not receive enough information through the Internet regarding the cruelty or the use of natural ingredients that the company purchased from the community. It is critical that we, and others such as Animal Health Services, find and remove these harmful practices from the local environment within 30 days of receiving a complaint or a complaint in the form of a complaint. We should not be allowed to continue, even as we find that some other companies are participating in this program. These companies and others are not making such products in Canada or the United States and will not be recognized for the same activity in Canada. Further, this program is a way of forcing the community to do what local businesses have been doing all over the world, without having the ability to continue with the practices which the community has recognized this program as having done when they were in fact using it.”
PETA: “Community Trade Is Harmful, Exceeds Legal Immunity”
PETA believes there is no legitimate reason for an animal rights organization to not promote and distribute product in Canada. Although the Animal Health Services Act prohibits the government from interfering in the welfare of animals and their owners, the Animal Health Services Division of the Ministry of Environment is obligated to maintain the highest standards of standards for animal welfare regulation in all animal slaughter facilities for the life of the animals involved in the industry. The Canada PETA website states:
“We believe that animal welfare protection is about as close to human as it can get. Animals are important to us in everything we do. The government may not allow companies to sell a product to people whose lives depend on it, and we would like to see it withdrawn. Canada PETA should have to explain how to continue to distribute that product without any government interference. Please don’t leave us with your name on this program, our website and the information we collect, or we may come to you in a very threatening tone and we will sue you.
“Thank you for your continued advocacy of fair and transparent veterinary practices and to all of the community members involved in the program. We hope this community will learn from what we have done as part of the program and move forward to build stronger relationships that would keep the communities healthier and safer for everyone in Canada.”
PETA: “Community Trade Rapprochement, Anti-Farming and Fungal Diseases.” “Fearing a change in the relationship between the U.S. and Canada?”
At a press conference following the release of the Humane Society of the United States’ (HSUS) Global Health Report, Canadian Human Rights Commission President Edward Klein said the program will further lead to “corrupt human decision-making by creating a vicious cycle that has harmed many of our countries.”
