fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffShakspear uses the whole paly [island, charecters, etc.] to comment on this mind/body thing (p.82)
The island is a utopia
Miranda = she who must be admired
All the people have a job to do and at the beginning the only people doing their jobs are the crew and Gonzalo (the only people who do not develop)
The other people are pretending to be people that they are not
Prospero was the duke of Milan, but he wanted to study magic and so let his bro. rule (Machiavelli?) he prizes his books (magic) over his dukedom
If you do not do what youre supposed to do Ð- bad things happen
Caliban (mind) = opposite of Arial (body) There had to be balance between the two – Aristotle: the body (Cal.) cannot exist without the mind (Arial) – both Caliban and Arial are slaves to Prospero (controlled by him) so they are Prospero
The play was written around 1600 when the new world was being colonized so Ð- one theory is that Claiban represents the native American Indians and Shakspear is commenting (or telling) Europeans how to react to them
Claiban cannot handle liquor, just like the Indians
Caliban might represent the idea of the noble savage [not civilized, but caring for their fellow man]
Aristotole says that the mind cannot exist without the body so cal and arial (people like) canno t exist in the real world —– the island [utopia] is where they can exist
Prospero represents everyone [mind body / good evil]
Aristotle Ð- nothing in excess Ð- there had to be a balance between mind and body Ð- (you cannot ignore one like Prospero tried to do)
Miranda and Ferdinand are innocent Ð- all they have to do in the play [their jobs] are to
