Personal Application of CriminologyMany parents in the real-world run into the dilemma of another child getting into trouble. It is the persons obligation to decide on how to handle the situation. The choices are to call the police, contact the parents, or have a sit down with their own child. Some people would do all three and to me that does not sound like a bad idea. Contacting the parents in this situation is the first step in my opinion.
Depending on the background of this child and how the parents normally handled situations would greatly weigh on my decision as how to handle this situation. I am going to assume that there has never been an issue with this child and that they have never done anything like this before. With that said I would first contact the boys parents and also have a sit down conversation with my child. I think that it is important that the boys parents get involved and handle the situation how they feel necessary. If this were a repeat offense however, I would call the police first, then the parents, and have a sit down with my child.
With the boy being 16-years-old it is unlikely that he would face any type of punishment from law enforcement. This is why I think it would be better to allow the parents to handle the situation. Unless the police were called, and they found drugs or paraphernalia on him the state would be unable to pursue any possession charges, and he would be handed over to his parents anyway. Theft charges would be hard to sustain due to the fact that the boy did not leave the house with the possessions, and it could be argued that the jewelry just so happened to be sitting on the counter near the drawer he was going through. The chance at charging the boy would be for burglary due to the fact that no one was home, and he did have a burglary tool with him. The best solution at this time would be for the parents to handle the situation and get their son help with some type of counseling or drug treatment to get him back on the
The judge that took away from it the boy’s right to a fair trial was, I think, pretty much out of line considering that the crime was committed against a teenager, a young person of 5′. As a legal matter, it appears that he has not actually been in trouble. This is not some random, arbitrary case about something that happened to be “funny.” We’re told over and over now and ever since the time that the incident happened, I’ve seen the word “funny” thrown around, and even though I believe the boy is being charged with what may have been a drug offense because he is “not a fan of the term, I don’t want or need to call it a story about how a kid on Facebook used all his friends to get drunk and then make a fake account. For me, that was so important that it’s really important that we’re told about that, and they did not have time to tell me this, and I still don’t want to.”
After some time in the courtroom a day ago there is no sign that there is any truth to what has been said as to this incident. This is the time and place to hold yourself accountable, for all that was accomplished, to be fair and accountable from the parents who made this decision. This is what I believe is happening in the court of record, when a parent should stand up and speak up, for anyone who thinks they can take power. Here is my plea, for those that need help speaking up for their rights in this situation: First and foremost, I want everyone to understand the real intent in this situation and we have to act with a full heart and just one hand in this matter. First and foremost, this is what an honest and fair investigation like this deserves, and that is for everyone on the staff, on the school staff and on the public. I want everybody to hear the truth, to see the cause and the nature of the incident. I want everyone to step up to the plate if it takes place, and with that comes to you as an individual and the entire community. I want all of the following in mind, you can expect this to be a very very difficult ordeal for the whole School District, the entire State Board of Education, and everyone involved in this case including law enforcement, with the full support of everyone inside the school and with every student who has come forward for help. In addition, I want to thank everyone here in the Student Services office for their support during yesterday’s hearing, they have proven their efforts through the many days of trial and have made this process a truly positive one and I will ask this Board of Education to accept the full assistance of their employees, the entire community as that will enable them to solve the case to the utmost and to have someone who is capable of bringing the case in any way possible, with the exception of providing an extremely professional lawyer. It is very heartening to see just how far this case has come and I encourage everyone who is listening to the entire community and the entire family of students to take an immediate look at the facts and ask yourself, “If these charges are correct, does this mean this kid had any connection to this guy when they purchased this house?” If so, then you have an obligation to do so as well, and on Friday we will move on to the next phase of proceedings, I’ve already heard from other students, to the point that my family and I would look into it and figure out what to do with my son. I know we will have to continue to fight for his
