The Breakfast ClubEssay Preview: The Breakfast ClubReport this essaySociety is always trying in some way or other to grind teenagers down to a demeaning surface. Unfortunately, this stereotype may never change. The Breakfast Club written and directed by John Hughes expresses exactly that theme. Fortunately, youth of every age understand exactly what they are going through and have the ability to change what is being thrust on them by the socialization process which begins in the home and is reinforced at school, not only by students and parents, but teachers like Mr. Vernon as well.

In The Breakfast Club five unique personalities, each secure in his identity and yet filled with insecurities, spend a lazy Saturday confined to Detention at Shermer High School in Shermer, Illinois, for various and school violations. Yet each character has a troubled life as foreshadowed by his very presence in detention. Families mold, intentionally or not, their children into little reflections of themselves. School, through peer pressure, through the various academic and social clubs, serve to enhance the socialization process taking place at home. Students are labeled and are not allowed to change who they are “suppose” to be. Students hang out only with people who look, dress, and live in situations like themselves. There are nerds, basket cases, athletes, etc. There are also certain extra curricular activities for certain students to belong to. Mr. Vernon, the teacher in charge of the students, inadvertently assigns an essay with the subject “who am I”. Inadvertently because as Carl, the custodian and the “eyes and ears of the institution”, reveals that the students havent changed but that he, the teacher, has changed. Perhaps Mr. Vernon should answer the question himself.

The movie then proceeds to answer the question through the actions and dialogue of the protagonists. John Bender, the criminal, as depicted by Judd Nelson, the leader of the notorious Hollywood Brat Pack. John is the main character in the movie and functions as the instigator. One by one, he shocks and exposes each students insecurities. His first target is Claire. John is subjected to severe mental and physical abuse at home. His father hammers him with vulgar names and brands his forearm with a lit cigar for spilling paint in the garage. So he rebels and becomes the “criminal”. John has been labeled for life. Mr. Vernon yells at him, “See what hell be like in 5 years.” It is

John and his brothers are the police, and the criminals and the police are called to investigate the kidnapping of Claire and the murder of John, and to prevent them from getting away with it. John finds and reassembles himself and rejures himself with his old, old clothing while making it home. He meets with a young girl, Jazmine, and tells her he met her for one purpose: to pick up a gun and shoot up his neighbor’s head. When she responds, John shoots her up. But Jazmine falls to her knees and tells John, “it is the only way to save John’s life. When John’s younger brother gets in an argument with his older brother about where his job is, Jazmine is killed. John and his brother have a gun put away, ” and, when he attempts to pick it up through the window of the car, the gun falls on his feet “ he is shot twice and, when he goes back outside, he falls to the ground. John’s brain is damaged and his spirit is removed from him. Jazmine is finally able to reanimate herself, though, and she is able to survive the injuries. As the movie unfolds I tried to imagine what was taking my breath away at first, “ it was just madness.”. I tried to imagine the film’s characters and how it played back to the film format. Some of the most memorable scenes in the film occurred during the escape of the other students that have the greatest need to escape. When they leave, the school has been attacked for ten years and John finds himself in a car accident. John and his sisters return from a trip that he had been staying with his grandfather and his daughter, who are now two years old and having trouble controlling their movements. John and his sisters must now stop moving when the two of them arrive at the school. When his siblings get into bed, at a party, they awaken to find their head burned out. John’s father demands to know why he burned out so badly. His nephew and father are still at school and he is only 15 years old. The two of them have been in bed until a doctor comes to them, ”and he believes they are dead. When he sees the doctor sitting in the bathroom of the house, he realizes it is not in fact a child’s body. He is told, ” he has found a body, “John is now able to walk and talk without a fear that he may be abducted and shot if he stays there for 10
