Throughout ones life it is possible to change significantly, even if it is that of a life of an animal. The Call of the Wild by Jack London is about a four-year old Saint Bernard and Scottish Shepard mixed dog named Buck. This story follows Buck through his journey through the Klondike. More importantly it is a nature related story about the survival of the fittest in nature. Buck experiences changes in himself as he adapts to the cold, harsh land where he is forced to tred in the snow, simply to help a group of men find shiny gold. He proves that he is fit and can endure the law of the club, the law of the fang, and the laws of nature. The environment
made the yound dog adapt and survive life in a new way. Buck seems to almost transform into a different animal by the end of the book.
Buck had had numerous owners and he learned things from each of them that made him stronger and smarter. Judge Miller taught Buck affection and approval for being a good hunting dog, a good guardian, and a good pet. Francis and Perrault taught Buck about dog sledding and life on the trail with other dogs. Bucks third owner, a mail man, taught him that dogs that dont work soon die. “A revolver shot rang out. The men came back hurriedly.” (London 63) Buck was froced to witness his owner kill one of his fellow sled dogs. Buck had to persevere. Hal and Mercedez Charles, more owners Buck once had, demonstrated how irresponsible humans can be in an unfimiliar and strange territory, after Buck watched them die from slippping through thin ice they were warned not to walk on. This event made Buck realize that animals have a better chance of surviving in nature, and that they also have better instincts and common sense. Thorton, the owner Buck charished the most, taught him through loving and caring what real devotion was. This made Buck follow and obey each one of the owners commands. When an Indian tribe were responsible for the death of this owner, Buck tracked them down attacked them engagingly until they were all dead. This had taught Buck that in fact it was easier to kill a man then it is some of the wild animals.
Buck had to become custom to the snow living up North in the Yukon. Bucks old Southern climat made
