Course Description:
This course is designed to give students a strong conceptual and practical knowledge of effective written, oral, interpersonal and electronic organizational communication. Not only will students improve their skill and confidence in communicating on-the-job, they will develop an appreciation for the important link between communication and organizational effectiveness. In addition, communication issues faced by individuals and teams at different levels of the organization and strategies that can be employed to address them effectively will be examined.

Course Objectives:
During this course, you will be exposed to a variety of topics related to organizational communication. It is expected that you will master a basic understanding of key concepts and demonstrate proficiency in written, oral, interpersonal and electronic communication.. While many of the principles behind effective organizational communication make common sense, best practices are more complex and difficult to apply. By drawing on a range of resources, your own experiences, and experiences shared by others, you will deepen your appreciation of the importance of effective organizational communication; explore the strengths of your communication style and areas where there may be room for improvement.

Specifically, students will have an opportunity to:
Understand the varied ways in which communication is used to achieve organizational objectives
Explore the diverse forms of organizational communication with an emphasis on building personal capacity to choose and use the form that is most effective given the circumstances

Develop an appreciation for the contribution communication makes to individual and organizational effectiveness and the communication roles that leaders, managers and employees play

Gain experience in written, oral, interpersonal and electronic organizational communication
incorporate best practices associated with various forms of organizational communication into their work
Examine internal and external issues that influence organizational communication and present challenges for employees, managers and leaders alike.
Pre-requisites:
In order to benefit fully from the course, students attending the Communication course are expected to have:
Ability to think logically
Spoken and written expressiveness
Grasp and command of grammatically correct English
Teaching Method:
The instructor will use a variety of methods to facilitate student learning about communicating effectively in the workplace. Class presentations (lead by the instructor, students or guest speakers), readings, exercises, problem solving, case studies, group discussions and teamwork are among the teaching methods that will used.
