On the one hand, nowadays, business corporations wield a huge power and influence in the world. The influences that business organizations have are even more important than the influence of worldwide organizations. While the power of this kind of institutions such as United Nations are based on moral pressure, the power of business organizations is more real, governments want the investment and the prize of foreign currency. There is a huge interest from both sides, from the countries and from the business corporations to enter in the countries, to produce or invest; therefore, business corporations can negotiate and influence in terms of human rights. For instance, they shouldnt invest in countries where the government does not respect human rights.
The relations between the developed and the developing countries are mainly based on the relations established by business corporations The business organizations in the developing world are reflecting what the western world is, consequently, they influence on how third world countries experience and see western culture. Developed countries should think aboutwhat do we want that they ÐlearnÐ from the developed world?
If business corporations respect and promote human rights, other organizations, communities and individuals would act in accordance with it. Business corporations are a clear point of reference, and therefore they should also set example for good practices and benchmarks.
On the other hand, if companies forget and ignore defending human rights, their reputation and bottom line would be at stake. For that reason, if companies look for a sustainable development they should respect and promote human rights. Does the society believe that the end justifies the means? I dont think so.
