The Path To Success
In this paper, I will discuss the issue of The Dream Act. I will explain what the dream act is, differentiate various kinds of the dream act and discuss whether or not The Dream Act is ethically right or wrong. The questions will be addressed both from Consequentialism and a Kantians point of view.
The Dream Act is a bill that has been set back for a while now. The bill is to allow illegal immigrants to be able to qualify for a citizenship. In order for someone to have the opportunity to get their citizenship they would be given a six years sentence to either complete a college education or serve in the military for at least two years. However on October 8, 2011 California governor Jerry Brown signed the “Dream Act” which gave illegal immigrant college student access to “STATE-FUNDED” financial aid. According to the National Conference of State Legislators Texas and New Mexico are the only two other states that allow immigrants to attend college. Lucas explains that California is one of about a dozen states that allow immigrants to pay in state tuition depending on the attendance and graduation from a state high school, this would qualify them for financial aid to California State University and the 112 community colleges. Not only would they be allowed loans but they would also be eligible for California grants based on their academic performance.”For the 2007-2008 academic years, the University of California reports that less than three-tenths of one percent of the systems 220,000 students were immigrants who qualified for in-state tuition. More than 68 percent of those 1,941 students were U.S. citizens or “documented” immigrants, according to the University of California. In the article Lucas states that at the state universities, the new law would affect 3,633 students, or less than one percent of the 440,000 students enrolled in the current school year. Of the nearly 2.9 million community college enrollees, 34,057 would be affected”. Reading this article made me wonder how people would feel about this and there were lots of different reactions. One reaction was that citizens are already having a hard time trying to get a class, others said that California is already going through some budget cuts and for the state to make up a private fund for these immigrants was not fair. Others feel that they are giving opportunities to those that are breaking the law. Recently president Obama has put a stop to the deportation on certain illegal immigrants. He stated that he does want to pass the dream act and feels that he
