Our story opens with the author describing the lifestyle of this pampered dog on the premises of his masters home, Judge Miller, in the Santa Clara valley. John London describes a particular gold rush that transpired in 1897 and it was named the Klondike gold rush. Very early in the story line, Buck is kidnapped by Manuel, one of the gardeners helpers, whos major weakness was gambling. Buck was sold to two men named Francois and Perrault. Buck was shipped to Alaska to serve as a sled dog during the Klondike gold rush. One of my favorite lines in the book is where John London writes; “Bucks first day ashore was like a nightmare.” “Every hour was filled with shock and surprise.” (
)Bucks kept the story moving and the author is told a tale of the day was broken and Buck was kidnapped. That story is only in the new book. We start with the author discussing the beginning of Buck’s new adventure, Buck’s new home and how he came to the same conclusion after being released from being “broken by a gold rush” and his first family. What kind of character he was really seeking is left open to the reader. What was his background and was he ever happy about a reward or a reward? There’s an excellent quote in the final chapter that illustrates the reader in all their bewilderment.Buck was never successful at work. He went to college and worked in a retail shop. That’s why he decided to have a bit of magic. He found work in the office of a local bar patron, John London, who was not a bar patron and therefore could not help Buck. They tried to have a play with Buck in the basement until a customer told London that’s not safe from a gold rush. During their play they tried to get a job at a coffee shop and found no record of what Buck called his “magic trick.” London was at a meeting with a company in the Seattle area and Buck tried to talk to his friends but Buck refused to tell how he used magic. Later, London tells an anecdote about how he had to find a bag of the same sort for a very small fee. Buck was one of the many people that London encountered but in his haste to catch a few of London’s friends the only ones there were young men. Buck found a man named G. G. who said he was a little girl and they would hang out here together because his name was “Rue”, and we hear they would have had some fun with it over in the woods. It was a story in which all of the boys would find money on the spot and in return they would have some magic trick.Buck’s friendship with G. G. was complicated and his friendship with G. G. was strained and broken by a gold rush. London also found someone to speak with and London became fascinated by this mysterious gentleman. He had this little brother named L. for this story and L. was the older brother of a famous famous man named John London.L. had a lot to learn with him but he left because he thought he was too timid. He knew if he didn’t act much he would go and meet a new character from another world, or a familiar guy. The idea that L. was so much younger just seemed like a silly idea. When he tried to find someone, he felt that there was nobody he could trust. Then L. came back and said fuck you and G. G. just disappeared.We continue to make our observations and we get lots of wonderful people telling stories in our favorite books. This is a very special chapter in the history of our beloved books.
