Surgery is one of the main treatments for cancer. It is a local treatment. This means it only treats one particular part of the body. Which is, of course, the part the surgeon operates on. So if you have a cancer that is completely contained in one area and has not spread, surgery may cure it by removing the cancer cells. But because it is a local treatment, surgery may not be a good choice of treatment for people whose cancer has spread to another part of their body.
