Lord of the Flies – Catching Piggy
CATCHING PIGGY
“Have the courage to live. Anyone can die.” (Robert Cody) These are the words that the young character Piggy, in William Goldings novel Lord of the Flies, lived by. These values are clearly displayed in my artwork, “Catching Piggy.” In this abstract colored-pencil sketch, there are traces of Piggys values gently and sometimes forcibly running through the veins of the upper half of the drawing. However, at the bottom, there are strong and undesirable poundings of death and obscurity throughout. At the center of “Catching Piggy,” all the hopeless energy and livid energy conflict violently, however not in a negative way, but rather neutrally to prove a single point. Despite his fears, Piggy stared death in the face, stubbornly wanting the greater good for everyone.
The very first thing someone would notice about “Catching Piggy,” is that there are three hands reaching down to catch a lifeless Piggy. The first hand attempting to catch Piggy is Ralphs. Ralph was one of the most understanding of Piggy, despite how terribly he treated him from time to time, at the beginning of the book right after the plane crash, Ralph made fun of Piggys name and punched him a few times. Instead of feeling angry, piggy felt joyed as he has never had this much attention . In other words, Piggy liked Ralph a lot and wanted to be friends. However, when Piggy sometimes attempted to put himself in danger, Ralph would make an effort to get Piggy out of it, even if it wasnt in a kind way. This is the human element that was added to the first hand; therefore I fleshed it out and added the color of skin.
The second hand is a little darker looking Ralphs, and it isnt as fleshed out as Ralphs hand. This hand belongs to and represents the antagonist Jack. Ever since the beginning, Jack was offensive to Piggy, but not in the same way as Ralph. Ralph never truly wanted to make Piggy look bad or feel worthless; he just would poke fun at him from time to time. As opposed to Jack
