“In biology and ecology, extinction is the ceasing of existence of a species or group of species. The moment of extinction is generally considered to be the death of the last individual of that species. Extinction is a natural phenomenon; it is estimated that 99.9% of all species that have ever lived are now extinct” (Http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction). No species is immortal and extinction goes on all of the time, whether it is in the United States or in a foreign country. The extinction of plant and animal species today is caused by humans. One cannot say that a species would decline by itself if humans had not been around. Unless we can find a way to stop the mass destruction of our forests and the their dwellers, we are at a disadvantage ourselves. This paper will discuss the extinction of species and how cloning/biotechnology will be critical for solving the problems of the future. It will also give a brief history of and the current status of cloning research, the human effects on ecosystems and species extinction, and the aspects of biology critical for solving extinction problems of the future.

Humans are the ones to cause the extinctions of our plants and animals; therefore we must be the ones to remedy the problem. People need to learn how to start taking responsibility for their actions. Limiting our consumption of certain things and recycling are just the beginning stages to help slow the damages of extinction. The website on extinction and conservation of animal products states that “We must learn to live in a sustainable way, for example, learn to use our natural resources, which include air, freshwater, forests, wildlife, farmland and seas without damaging them. As populations expand and lifestyles change, we must keep the World in good condition so that future generations will have the same natural resources that we have” (Http://www.y2y.net/science/conservation).

Our forests are being cut down to make way for homes and more large businesses. Dumping wastes and oil for selfish reasons is polluting the waters. The land and water are home to millions of species. Dumping and destroying their homes are the reason for their extinction. Other reasons include the hunting of these animals and the collection of these plants for selfish purposes. In our textbook, the authors state “Loss of tropical forests is especially devastating to species diversity. As many as half the species presently on Earth
