Many people associate men with quarrying etc. because they are stronger and have a bigger build but this is usually because of your genes and therefore biological. An example is men often do wrestling however women with a bigger build often do wrestling too.
As are organs and body develops, it becomes more obvious to which sex you belong to. Through these changes boys become more masculine, whilst girls more feminine. Children are more vulnerable, so follow their peers and behave in the norm for their gender which is often related to their sex.
During and after puberty manipulation plays a big role. An example of this is when parents say typical teenage girl/boy. This may also reinforce the pressure of behaving as the norm gender for their sex.
When females are pregnant and then have their child they feel like it is up to the more than the father to look after the child and care for it. This can be why females often take on the carer role. We assume that females are more patient than males and therefore it is better for them to work around children.
Families – Manipulation – Boys and Girls are encouraged to be behaving in the norm for their gender, and therefore discouraged for any behaviour associated with opposite sex. Parents also speak to boys and girls in different ways which also helps socialise them. An example of this is little princess. Even when children get older they boys and girls are allocated different cores so they can see their expected roles in society. Canalisation – Canalisation occurs when children are quite young. Parents push their children into gender-specific roles, which are usually done through gender-specific toys. For example boys are encouraged to play with cars and girls dolls. Imitation – Small children often want to please their parents and they do this by copying them. Girls try to help in the kitchen or with children whilst boys try to fix things.
Mass Media – In this postmodern world media is everywhere. On T.V dominant roles are often represented by males, and therefore tend to be portrayed as more intelligent than females. Women are conveyed as more emotional and caring and there purpose is to look after children and care for them. Ageism – Women who are considered to be too old are given less opportunity than males of the same age as they have to prove themselves more to directors.
