The story begins with the character of Dorothy, who is described as a kind and innocent girl that lives with her aunt and uncle on a very dull and gray farm in Kansas. Dorothy decides to run away from home after Miss Gulch threatens to kill her dog Toto. After she returns home, a tornado hits the farm. Dorothy is knocked unconscious and wakes up to find out that she is now in the colorful Land of Oz. She also finds out that her house has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. She is a savior to the Munchkins and the animals of the land.
Dorothy receives, from the beautiful Witch of the North, ruby slippers that will protect her. Dorothy finds out that the only person that can help her get back home is the Wizard of Oz, who lives in the city of Oz. So, Dorothy follows the yellow brick road in order to make it to the Wizard.
While traveling, Dorothy makes friends and with the Scarecrow (who wants a brain), the Tinman (who wants a heart), and the Lion (who wants courage from the Wizard). They make it to the Wizard and learn that before they can receive what they desire they must defeat the Wicked Witch of the West.
Eventually they are able to reach the Wicked Witch and kill her. After doing so, they all receive what they wanted, and live happily ever after.
