However, the virtual team should not be used as a “partner” (it does not help to have a “partner” with you) and instead should be used to communicate the problem in a virtual way. This is where many are trained as a team to communicate using different methods and techniques – such as the computer, e-mail, cell phone, e-mail or telecommunication. This can make it cumbersome, and the idea can cause friction and anger among people and even groups. The difference with physical team activities is that when a virtual team leader is present and communicating, he will communicate the problem directly with others as well as his/her team members which is what makes for an efficient teamwork. When a virtual team leader does not speak directly during this time, then he will be in danger of being verbally harassed or even threatened.

In many situations, virtual teams are used for team activities or in different areas such as communication through e-mail, communication with team members on the phone, phone calls, and email. There is a significant difference to one person working with a virtual team in a group versus in a group activity. A new person is assigned to one team work mode and will not be tasked with group work for the next team work cycle. The new person will then become part of the group through their work and use their own team work mode and knowledge. This enables them to create their own communication habits and goals in order to facilitate their own communication.
