This documentary is about Charles Darwin and how his theory of evolution is viewed and how it affected society and science through time. The documentary begins with that people believed and still believe that divine intervention was the origin of species. The documentary says that almost half of Americans believe that divine intervention was the origin of species. It also says how people may have had trouble to come to terms with the fact that we are related to apes. The documentary explains how Darwins theories were misunderstood by the people of his time. The documentary gave examples of how religious people thought he was attacking their religion. It also gave examples of despotic people like Hitler who used the phrase “the survival of the fittest” to try to justify exterminating other races. Darwin himself was religious and was careful in saying that species evolved through natural selection god may have started the whole process. The documentary explains that all that we know of biology would lack any sense if not viewed from the theory of evolution. The documentary goes on about how Darwin believed that only those who were the best adapted would survive which he called natural selection. Darwin went on a five year journey to study the worlds species and he wrote his findings in his journals. They says on his journey to the Galapagos Islands he really came to understand natural selection. The documentary shows doctors who explain that through natural selection diseases that we thought we had conquered are evolving and reappearing. The doctor shows a bacteria culture that has become resistant to something that was lethal to it just a week ago. He goes on about how penicillin killed close to 100% of bacteria at first. Then a few years later 25% of bacteria became resistant. Then after it became commonly used in hospitals bacteria became up to 75% resistant to it.
