This gives them the opportunity to have more clients, which in turn means more money for them. Such services can cost as much as two dollars per minute. They have raised concerns about confidentiality and the quality of care. Many of these therapists do not even have advanced clinical training. As a patient seeking help who is already most likely in a vulnerable state, it is difficult to determine who is treating them and if it is from a certified professional in the field of psychology.
Sending Insecure and unproven medical information is a common part of the online experience. Many people wonder what happens if their doctor’s card is discovered, as it would take years to properly label a patient’s illness. A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, as well as other diseases, is not diagnosed unless it is suspected to be caused by a brain tumor, as is the case in recent cases of Alzheimer’s. Another characteristic of online providers is a lack of documentation. Even though most of the articles available online in psychology refer to treatment and research, their reviews often do not specify how or why, especially in cases where patients have a clear “no treatment” attitude.”It is important that you contact your physician and see if there is any information online you think is not important or to avoid. If you find a medical problem, be sure to communicate to your physician the details of your own treatment,” says Karen L. Vetter, Ph.D.A. (Dr. Vetter Associates) , an associate professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of California at Riverside. The Internet and the “new doctor” attitude is also seen at least in the medical literature. “Online therapists are looking to do a service for a wide range of patients. They think about their patients, their family and neighbors,” says Vetter. “They are providing a service so that patients can feel like they are being treated properly.

Similarly, there are now thousands of chat groups and virtual support groups available around the clock on the Internet for everything from depression to substance abuse, anxiety, and eating disorders. These groups provide opportunities for people with similar problems to communicate with each other, freely trading advice and empathy. This is a definite benefit to on-line therapies because people feel less inhibited about expressing sensitive and personal issues. Of course, people who choose chat group therapy do not know who is on the other end of the computer connection or whether the advice they receive is at all appropriate.
