There once was a tribe in Swan Lake, Idaho called the kootnakuwannas. Swan lake is
about 10 miles north of Rupert, Idaho. In Swan Lake lived Chief Lyon his wife sunshine of blue
oceans, his two daughters named yellowbird and pathfinder, and his horse named midnight.
Midnight was a very adventurous horse. He was different than all of the other horses in the tribe
because he could talk to Chief Lyon.
It was on a cold winter night in January 1565, when Midnight decided that he no longer
wanted to reside in Swan Lake with Chief Lyon. The next morning he had a conversation with
Chief Lyon about what was on his mind. He told Chief Lyon that he felt that there was more to
life than Swan Lake. He was tired of the cold and brittle winters and the wet summers. He also
reminded Chief Lyon that he created the people out of sticks and stones. He and the other horses
gathered sticks out of the forest and pushed them over a cliff. Next, they pushed stones over the
cliff and out popped humans. Afterwards, he took the ability of talking away from the horses. He
created the humans because the horses were getting unruly and needed someone to oversee them.
Midnight wrapped up his conversation with Chief Lyon by saying that since humans were made
out of sticks and stones so they are stupid. They never know what they want and always want
more.
