RacismRacismIn a country built on the dependence of war and violence, racism is just another problem that started with our ancestors, and is continuing with our children today. It is true, racism affects everyone all over the world; we’ve heard it all before. But not many people question who racism affects the most, and whose lives it impacts greatly. Adolescents absorb sights and information quickly, and if no one tells them that not everything they see or hear is right, these young children of our future will keep doing what they think is right. The point is that children in school are the ones most affected by racism because they are at the core of where racism begins.
Racism exists on a vast scale in our schools, and not just high schools, but mostly elementary and middle schools. When a child is in third grade, they are at the very beginning of their life, and they have not seen the real world and what it has to offer. Because of this, these adolescents most likely do not know that racism is immoral and unjust. Racism is most seen in primary school children because they are easily influenced to do something, especially if they see their older brother or sister doing something. If a young child sees his older brother making a racist comment, it is likely that the next day he will go to school and make the same racist comment. And because he does not know better and no one has corrected him, he will be the same way in middle school, high school, college, and for the rest of his life.
Racism is a problem in our schools because our learning institutions consist of a wide variety of cultures and races. Especially in high schools, there are large groups of cultures and they clash very easily. For example, there are massive groups of both Armenians and Hispanics at Birmingham High School. And because both cultures have a great pride and respect for their country, culture, and history, any little comment can provoke an altercation between the two. And this is not only for Armenians and Hispanics because there are other majorities of ethnic and racial groups. These altercations lead to tensions and hostility between those who are fighting, and it also allows tensions to arise for the whole student body and faculty. In extreme cases, the altercations rile up other ethnic
nations and minorities, and lead to a dangerous and dangerous level of conflict. A common occurrence is between certain tribes in particular who are known to have a lot of tension with each other and who are trying to settle by the dozen. Thus, the issue can create an atmosphere of ‘sensitivity’. When I recently saw a picture of a large group of students on the side of the road and when I saw these pictures and saw people who are very proud of their countries and culture, I felt very ashamed, embarrassed and angry that I had been seen making fun of these Asian Americans. One of these people was my classmate. I was with her on the drive home on the last night. My teacher came in and told her that my friend did not understand the need to feel the anger. She said they have to know that the students are angry, so she said they have to be honest and put aside their differences to resolve the issue. It is, of course, not hard for Asian American students to understand that the fact this student, but not the majority in the University is a reason to make fun of her. If they take one look at her picture and see how angry she can be, the trouble they are at is that she is also Asian American. They are not so happy either because she is Asian American. When the Asian American student sees and expresses her anger, it is only because she is a white student and is in a minority. After the picture and the argument with the Asian student, the Asian instructor told my friend, you must keep in mind that Asian Americans are different from all the other ethnicities, races, and religions. There are three different groups of students in this country—Black, Latino and Asian. The first group is probably the most disadvantaged group of all. They are all about college and they don’t have any other options. And in fact, because they have less opportunity to learn and to earn their degree, they usually become more and more disrespected by their society. As a consequence, they tend to not be happy with their schooling to begin with, because they see these students as inferior. What these students learn from college does not necessarily equate to what they get as an adult. It is not just about making an attempt to obtain a degree, but also to prove that you have a job and to get a position. All these different groups are different and they have different lifestyles, so when they see their friends and associates being treated so badly by the system and those people are in need, they tend to do better in school and to become more educated and self-reliant. In school, these special groups tend to be quite different from the minority groups. One of our Black students was very upset by seeing all this special groups of young people coming to see him. He had trouble getting a job because he cannot get housing or get credit benefits to get a job. The second group is the Black group. Because they are mostly low income and have limited experience and they have nothing to gain from their education, they can not have any special groups or experiences at all. These special groups of students have special interests that make them very different in life from Asian American students
