“Despite Christopher’s difficulties it is his parent’s actions we cannot accept” Do you agree?
In the text “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”, Christopher Boone suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism (QUOTE). This means he can be sometimes a handful for his parents. It is because of his condition that his mother leaves and his relationship with his father breaks down. But its not just Christopher’s fault his parents are having a hard time. They them selves make some bad decisions that lead to each of them feeling frustrated and even forcing themselves to do some morally bad things (QUOTE). It is these things that Christopher parents do that we, the readers, cannot accept, despite Christopher’s condition.
Some problems his parents face are purely to do with Christopher, for instance, he feels no emotional connection with other people, even his parents (QUOTE), also he prefers to be alone, hates being touched, and finds people confusing because he cannot understand their facial expressions. These are just some of the problems faced when you are raising a child who has Asperger’s syndrome. But it is these problems that lead to the downfall between Christopher and his parents. His father instead of being angry with Christopher bottles up all his emotions and waits until it’s too much and cracks (QUOTE). Also his mother, Judy, is short tempered and cannot handle Christopher when he throws a tantrum because he is in a crowded place and starts groaning and lying down on the floor.
Judy Boone in particular is most affect by Christopher, it is a mixture of her short temper and that she is depressed (QUOTE). The major thing we, the readers, cannot accept is that Judy runs away, with Mr. Shears, from Christopher, “And I think that was when I realised you and your father were probably better off if I wasn’t living in the house” Pg. 136. Why can we not accept this? Well Christopher is her son, she gave birth to Christopher knowing she will have to put up with thick and thin raising him. Having an affair is one thing, but abandoning her child and leaving, is another. Of course she writes to him every week or so, but the journey between London and Swindon is relatively short, just writing to him and not travelling to see him shows that even through she does care, she still thinks that she isn’t needed and Ed is managing just fine with Christopher.
