On page 45, Garland clearly shows why Sammy and Zeph will not ‘fit in’ to the beach community. Through close analysis of the paragraph beginning: “They were Harvard students…which only causes confusion and, ultimately, resentment,” explain why Garland uses these 2 characters, and WHY they must ultimately die.
Garland uses these two characters to show the broad range and variety of people who are traveling to Thailand to party, smoke pot and escape the normal world. He empowers the contrast of people by picking the reputed top of intellectual people, Harvard students Sammy and Zeph, and opposing them to most of the other backpackers – just some high wrecks of human beings.
Zeph and Sammy incorporate structure and order in real life. Although they are continuously smoking weed, they show how the human mind can be tricked out through simple tricks „“ and let us with the knowledge that there is a hierarchy of intelligence – Zeph and Sammy would directly become leaders at the beach without necessarily wanting it. The society and community might feel ashamed
