With a cheer of laughter as people walked through the cold streets of Omela during the winters festival, men were unloading cargo at the rigging of boats in harbor sparkled with flags. In the streets people walked between chimney houses with smoke coming out of them from there fireplace, between gardens that were once green now frozen and under avenues of trees now covered covered in snow, past great parks and frozen lakes, procession kept on moving. Some were decorous; Elderly Men and Woman in long stiff robes of mauve or gray and some were merry woman carrying their babies and chatting as they walked. In other streets people gathered gathered singing christmas carols in the streets or at peoples doors. It was now officially the holiday season.
Sounds fun doesn’t it! How is one to tell about fun? How describe the citizens of Omelas?
They were not regular people either but indeed they were happy. Smiles forever lasting on peoples faces as they walked through the streets throughout the day and everybody having no worries about life and everyones friendly to each other and caring for one another. No there wasn’t any mayor or president, or a set of laws, if they did there were very little of them. The people in the city of omelas lived a happy life. You’re probably wondering, how are these people living in such such happy lives with no worries? Well it’s all because of one reason.
Somewhere far far away within the city lay a room deep under the city of Omelas. A room with one door knob, that stays locked 24/7 and no windows on all sides of the room. There lies a young boy barely even 8 years old. The room has no heat, very dirty, and is never cleaned. You’re probably wondering, do the citizens of Omelas know about this atrocity? This wrong going on to a innocent young boy.
“Have you ever wondered what would happen if the city let that young boy be free able to finally live his life?”. “No and I really don’t care John so stop asking me that.””That doesn’t bother you at all? How could you be so heartless Michael”. “Think of it like this, sacrifice one and save the rest”, Michael said. “And what does that mean?”, John said. “It means, if it wasn’t for that little boy you cry about and feel sorry for all day we wouldn’t be living such a great and carefree life we live now, so maybe you should be thanking him more than feeling sorry for him”.
