Division1 should be more like Division 3. This can be defended very precisely by using two primary reasons. The BCS must be done away with and there should be playoffs for football. Also, the academic standards should be set higher for Division 1 as they are higher for Division 3. These two reasons will not only reshape Division 1, but it will help it prolong down the future.
The BCS is set up to give college football fans a championship game between the top two teams. The two teams are decided by human and computerized polls. The computerized selection system was supposed to prevent disputes which will be able to balance human imperfection. It would stabilize human frailties among the voters in the polls, with a solid dose of cold statistics.
This sounds perfect in theory, but in reality it is extremely flawed. It is flawed because it limits the “field of teams” to just two teams. Any system that limits the championship field to just two contenders is fatally flawed. No poll, human or computer, can produce as good of a conclusive a result as a playoff tournament. This is the way every other major NCAA championship is determined.
The only reason that the BCS is in place is because it generates a lot of revenue. It was originally designed to satisfy fans, but there was also another reason for this. The bowl games are not designed primarily to satisfy fans. They benefit the top-tier college football programs. This is because the colleges receive huge monetary payouts of $14 million to $17 million for participating in the four major bowl games. Also, besides the colleges, there were many other benefactors. Some of the other winners include the tourist industries in the cities that host bowl games and the networks that have the TV rights.
I argue that with the uncertainties surrounding College Football, there must be a better way of deciding who plays for the national title and is finally crowned “king of the mountain.” There is, and always has been, the argument for some sort of playoff system putting the best of the best against each other and a more objective way of answering the question of who is number one and two respectively.
This could all be resolved by putting in a playoff system. It should use a wide-open tournament. A tournament like the 16-team playoffs used to determine whose number 1 in the division 3. This would truly help out with a lot of the controversy,
