In order to inspire my peers I founded the Peer Academy Support Group, which provides academic tutoring to students from the surrounding middle and high schools. Along with a friend, we work with students so that they did not lose confidence in themselves even though did not do great on quizzes, or tests. Within my high school, I was a college peer counselor and I helped guide my classmates in the college process and assisted the college counselor at my school. College is important to me because I want my peers and myself to hold a higher knowledge in order to make our community a better place for the next generation. I encourage student to follow in a path to higher education in order to follow their dreams. I plan to make all of my mentees proud of me as head to UCI in the fall majoring in Environmental Engineering.
The journey I conquered last year, made my philosophy for life “no shortcuts, no excuses.” When my grandmother was very sick in the hospital; I was under a lot of stress. I was scared for my grandmothers life because there were times the doctors did not know if she would survive. I was concern about my mother and sister and how they were dealing with my grandmother poor health. I started to struggle in school and I lacked a social life. Since, I had the mindset of “no shortcuts, no excuse” I had to be self-reliant and self-motivated in order to bring my grades up. Teaching myself how to be responsible and confident makes me proud of the person I am today and I am prepared to overcome any challenges in the future.
English has not been my favorite subject in my K-12 education. I always preferred to solve an equation over reading a book. I grow to understand the art of English in the 11th grade after reading novels like Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, The Great Gabsy by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Candide by Voltaire. I did not like analyzing poetry in my English classes; poetry is very difficult and unclear to me. Im not worried about this online class too much. If I do my best and pace my self, I will do fine.
