Is the Emphasis on a Color-Blind Society an Answer to Racism?
Racism is defined as views, practices and actions reflecting the belief that humanity is divided into biological groups called races and members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less or more desirable or undesirable, inferior or superior. Race remains a big issue in todays society. The color blind society suggests that everyone is equal and race and or skin color should not be a factor in success. This concept says that we as a society should be color blind; for an example, when applying for a job or school the applier should not have to identify their race. With this concept everyone will have a fair chance because no racism can be applied if there is no race identified.
Is this the answer to Racism? No, this concept might improve racism but it is not the answer to racism. Racism has been a problem, for so long, one thing like this will not change or solve the problem. This might be something good but it will never change how certain people feel. For example, if a black racism women owns and business and is now hiring; she is applying this color blind concept. On the application it nowhere ask for the race of the applier; a black and white man apply for this job with the same qualifications and they both get called in for the interview. Yes this concept got both men an interview, but will it get both men the job? Probably not, if she doesnt like white men; she would most likely hire the black man over the white just because or her personal beliefs.
So what if we were color blind, would that change anything? If race or racism was brought to an end we would still have many problems with discrimination and prejudice. Wouldnt there still be people in their own little groups. And wouldnt these groups they have formed think they were inferior to all the other? Some people would only stick to certain people based on socioeconomic status, education, attractiveness, religion, and culture. So there will always be something that will divide people from each other. And there will always be people who think that their set of people is higher than another group and will discriminate against another group.
Racism is also not just about color of skin, so how can being blind to skin solve this problem? Racism is also a cultural issue. People in different cultures have different view and values. And what I might think is right and just someone from another culture might think its wrong and filthy. So, ultimately this will make them think what I do is wrong and I am beneath them. And now that I am beneath them, everybody who shares the same culture as me is beneath everyone else. Racism is going to exist no matter what.
This color blind concept is kind of just an excuse. If I am following this concept then Im not races, I see everyone as equal and I just see people, no color. But is that really how I feel, or is that just a concept Im following so you think that? Nothing in this world can change how people truly feel. Some people were raised to think that they are better than someone
