Enhance your personal power in the organization by:
Developing your knowledge and skills to the point of becoming an acknowledged expert.
In this area I have over the better part of my career developed my skills in the areas I managed with upmost energy and knowledge. In all areas I became the go to person for those areas and more. This power I have in this area is mostly developed. My motto is always to learn one new thing each day.
Enhancing your attractiveness to others, for example, by fostering the attributes of friendship (genuineness, intimacy, acceptance, validation of self-worth, tolerance, and social exchange).
This power is also a strong suit I possess. I am even tempered in all situations including stressful and not so great situations. Many come to me to discuss items of concern including personal items. It is commonly a point of fun with most that I need to have a take a number dispenser at my door. This of course must be moderated because it can become a burden on me in getting my own items accomplished.
Being extremely dependable and, when appropriate, putting forth more effort than expected.
My motto has always been “Do whatever it takes and nothing is beneath me”. Even though at its cover is a little like a bad quote, it does show people you are more than able to participate in a team and not be the guy that says “I don’t do windows”.
Increase your intimacy by aligning your behaviors and decisions with core organizational values.
I believe that each of the items above culminate to being in line with our core organizational values. We have core values that state to treat each other with dignity and respect. Agree to disagree is also looked as a positive instead of getting bound by timeless arguing. I know that my boss (a vice president) appreciates my ambitious traits and go get’m attitude.
Increase the centrality of your position by:
Expanding your network of communication contacts.
I am constantly broadening my contacts and always look to see who I can associate with to improve my abilities to accomplish my goals. I know that it may sound like common sense but many don’t know that even the “little” guys are important to know and communicate. Even the custodian is important to make sure things look good for that important visit. Never take anyone for granted is my motto here.
Staying abreast of relevant information.
Staying on top of what’s going on is very important. If you live with your “head in the sand” how will you know the pulse of the people around you and those whom you have affected?
