Diversity refers to a variety of differences between people in an organization. There are numerous situations that can fall into the diversity category. The top main issues that companies experience are religious beliefs, where a person or organization tries to force their beliefs on others. The next one would be Gender Equality & Sexual Harrassment, where people are discriminate because of their gender be male or female. For example being passes up on different promotions due to gender. Then there is the issues of having others say inappropriate sexual things be it verbal or physical. The workplace will encounter many challenges while trying to maintain diversity within the workplace. A major challenge is communication. There should be programs establish to help overcome perceptual, cultural and language barriers within the company. Another challenge would be resistance to change. We need to help employees get rid the attitude that this is how I always do things and it cannot be changed.
However there are many benefits to working in a diverse atmosphere. One major one would be the variety of viewpoints. The company can tap into many backgrounds, talents, perspectives, abilities and disabilities to gain more knowledge of different issues. We also are able to hear different solutions to the problems that occur within the company. In this society that we live in sometimes we are discriminated in the workplace and in that case we can contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission who is responsible for enforcing federal laws regarding discrimination. The EEOC can investigate chargers of discrimination against employers.
