What is the function of resources and leadership roles in IT management?        There are many functions of resources and leadership roles in IT management. The first role of the IT management is through the Information system (IS) department. This department is tasked with the “effective planning, building, and operating of a computer and communications infrastructure”(Brown, DeHayes, Hoffer, Martin, & Perkins, 2012, p. 5). This assists management with the smooth operations of the day-to-day activities of businesses. Resources functioning properly play a vital role in all businesses that are involved with IT. Technology infrastructure plays a vital role in “computer software, and networks that enable an organization to conduct business and share information across organizational units as well as business partners”(Brown et al., 2012, p. 5). This allows employees and managers to access information anytime and anywhere in order to stay connected to all of their business related activities. Human Resources helps to allow “IT professionals and managers who have the needed mix of technology, business, and interpersonal skills to plan for, design, and manage the other IT resources”(Brown et al., 2012, p. 5). This puts the people that have the IT talent into areas that they can excel. Managing the human resource side of IT is critical in order to establish a good mix of IT professionals within the business world. The last major resource in the IT field is the business and IT relationships. This is the “established relationships between business and IT workers to ensure that the other IT resources are aligned with business needs” (Brown et al., 2012, p. 5). The business/ IT relationships are important in order to benefit both the IT workers and the businesses that use them. The relationship between the two plays a vital role in order to have the business design and the IT applications working on the same page for the same end result. All of these resources are managed through IT leadership roles. There has been a relatively new position that has been created for the growing demand of IT leadership roles. The new position is the chief information officer (CIO). The CIO may report directly to the CEO (chief executive officer), CFO (chief financial officer), COO (chief operating officer), or the CSO (chief security officer). The CIO oversees all of the operations within the IT department where he or she is employed. From the CIO are the IT managers, which are responsible for system operations. The IT managers manage IT employees and report to the CIO on the activities of the IT department. Some senior business managers are playing roles in the IT leadership roles by serving on boards that oversee the financial side of the IT department (Brown et al., 2012, p. 6). Overall, all of the roles from IT employees to CEO’s are important in the IT department in order to achieve proficiency and accurate work for the business in which they are employed.
