The first part of the paper strives to present the concept of emotional intelligence, by reflecting upon the results of the emotional intelligence test. Additionally, this part also presents ways to enhance emotional intelligence.
In order to achieve a successful position at the working place, the employee emphasizes on enhancing many features of intelligence that involves, verbal skills, logical reasoning skills and math skills, besides many others. However, the concept of mastering or enhancing emotional intelligence is often neglected by many persons seeking job. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a term created after years of research, and is defined as the capability of assessing, identifying and completely controlling the emotions of others, as well as, of oneself. The scientific literature accepts two models of EI, which are the Ability EI model and Trait EI model (Harms and Credé, 2010). Likewise, there has been much research conducted on the relationship of EI with job performance. Some researchers suggest a positive connection between job performance and EI, while other studies found an inconsistent relation. However, a compensatory theory between the relationship of job performance and EI was established that suggests a positive relation between them with a decrease in cognitive intelligence (Cote & Miners, 2006). Another research reveals that there exists a more positive relation between job performance and both models of EI when the job requirement involves a higher degree of displaying emotion (Joseph and Newman, 2010). Therefore, it can be argued that EI is important for ensuring success at job. However, a study conducted for finding the connection between EI and entrepreneurial behavior revealed that the levels of EI did not help in finding the larger amounts of entrepreneurial behavior among employees (Ahmetoglu, et. al. 2011).
I have also taken the emotional intelligence test on the Queendom website (2012), which consisted of 146 questions related to my emotional feelings in different contexts. The questions were mostly related to controlling my feelings in certain situations or about helping others in certain situations. Moreover, there were certain events listed in the test to which, I was supposed to mark my abilities ranging from minor to disaster. The report of test revealed a 56 score out of 100. This reveals that I have atleast some basic skill when it comes to identifying, perceiving and expressing emotions towards myself and others. However, there is still a great deal of room to improve on this core ability. By improving your skills in this area of emotional intelligence, you will be in a better position to read others, understand how they feel, and effectively identify your own emotions. These skills form the basis of your ability to relate to others as well as your ability to understand yourself.
According to my research on the concept of EI, there are four attributes related to EI, which are: self-awareness, self, management, social-awareness and relationship management. There could be many ways to enhance the level of your EI depending upon the areas where you need improvement. However, there are five general skills to enhance EI, which are:
Developing the ability to reducing stress quickly.
Developing the ability for quickly
