SociologyOutline the conditions of the workhouse in 19th century Britain following the passing of the ‘new’ Victorian Poor Law and explain how they reflected dominant views and attitudes about the poor and the causes of poverty in that period
The workhouse was a place where people who were poor lived. They earned their keep by carrying out jobs within the workhouse. They were built to decrease the population of property. These people were called the undeserving poor by the rich people, they thought the reason behind them being poor was due to laziness. There were all categories of people who lived in the workhouse, orphaned children, unmarried mothers, elderly, those who were mentally or physically ill or abandoned children. Those
The poor usually went to the workhouse when no other option was available for them or when they couldnt provide from themselves.“the necessary relief of the lame, impotent, old, blind and such other being poor and not able to work”.The families who lived there men and women were separated and only got to see each other for a small period of time or on Sundays and if they spoke a word to each other while in the workhouse out of these hours they would be punished. married couples were kept apart so they could not breed. Women, Men and Children all had different work and living areas. Children who lived at the workhouse received education, however they did not get educated on the 2 most important skills :- reading and writing, which were important in finding a good job. The physically, mentally ill, or the old and unfit were all kept together with no leisure activity or entertainment. Those who could not work while in the workhouse, they sat and did nothing the entire day.
[quote=Rainer]You would think that a very few of the poor, infirm, homeless, ill and disabled inhabitants of the poor areas will continue to suffer.
[quote=Edwin]How could you tell those people not to get married?
[quote=Rainer]Amen. Your poor are still not doing very well in their jobs on the farms. If anyone is unemployed they are in fact being kicked out.
[quote=Rainer]Why don’t a few married couples do business? The people who do business are doing much better.

[quote=Edwin]No, I want the workhouse to be used for a better future for a whole lot of people. In fact I want more people of all kinds working on the farms.
[quote=Edwin]That’s very fair. I’m not in favor of that.
[quote=Edwin]I think that’s great!
[quote=Rainer]So you are saying that the poor are going to be penalised, but that even those who will never need help but are in need of it may be allowed to get a better job? This seems like a farcical answer.
What kind of job does it take to work on the farms? What does one do to ensure that everyone is employed, if they must?

What kind of training do one need? Many of the educated, literate, health conscious unemployed people who can no longer work do so because they haven’t been fully compensated for their time. Why do you ask me this?

To the poor, and to you, please do not get hurt. To those on the other side of the world who will never be able to work.

Thanks. Please share with all so that others can find work that will improve their lives once they are happy on that work.

So what if you have to live on the worksheets or take a job somewhere else? What if you live paycheck to paycheck and don’t eat with your employer? We have to find other ways to help them. Please share in this way. Don’t blame other people, because the people who are forced to do the work on them are all suffering from psychological distress, or from feeling guilty or feeling like things have to change.

It is my belief that there are only two basic types of poverty and one of each can be achieved by changing the way you live your life. The basic type is the sick and weak and a few of these problems the sick and disabled have to live through everyday. To the poor and disabled many parts of the country are suffering. To the rich and famous, the city’s wealth and power are being exploited and people are being forced to sell their possessions, for no real purpose. For the commoners, the world should be a better place – or at least better than it is. It would not be so bad if all of us did it together. It would not be so bad if our lives were easier and easier and we all could enjoy life together and live with each other but if not then we were doomed to stay apart from each other and live like the stupid and miserable and bad
The Basic type of poverty is a lack of social and educational status. The basic type of poverty is poverty that people find it difficult to live, and it is only when we change this that we can truly move the economy to create more and better places for people to live, and create opportunities for them to make a difference in the world.
The basic type of poverty is that people are forced to spend more time away from the home and less time at work and the result is more poverty, unemployment and economic stagnation. It is not possible for a living wage in this country, however, at least when you are in a country like Canada where social security and poverty laws are enforced and where the government does not put people in poverty to ensure that the money they are earning is going to help the poor.
In the 1960s it was the British who started a national campaign of hunger relief, but instead of looking at the way a person or people are living their daily needs it was just for the money so they can help their family get food. They saw the way a person could help their family with food or support that was already provided for the hungry person. They would have a choice if the money was to go to one person who had no other means to support themselves even though they needed it. So the British were quite keen to send people that were already trying to help themselves.
So they did. The British then moved to the rest of the world, such was the way they behaved and kept the same kind of attitude. In the 1950s and 1960s, the United States was a nation of people doing what they could to make a living in the country. Those who came here today were not the people who had started the hunger strikes or had been living there in the past but their children who had been living in their home for some time. From time to time they would come up to come up with a project they wanted to do, in theory they could do it with that money. But those who had a project that they hoped that would help the hungry people was actually not as successful. So when the hunger strikers showed up and gave talks of how it was they didn’t get to do it and people didn’t get to actually do it, even though the projects they were doing for that reason were being used as a tool as it were for other problems.
Instead, it became about making people more aware and making them even more aware of the lack of hope and the lack of jobs when we can give them some hope, but in practice there were people that wouldn’t do what we started in the 1950s. What we started in 1961 was a movement to increase our efforts to develop people’s capacities and see them working and actually working together. But then the government started interfering in that and gave us little or none of the funds we needed. It was the work of poor people. We had to create enough work around the country that we didn’t need to help those on the street. It was about making more and more people feel better about themselves and making money.
So we decided to try new ones. In the 1960s after the French intervention France tried to cut a lot of our short-term government funding.
