The Ethics Simulation
The establishment of G-BioSport began in the early 1990s by Carson Nelson and Rian Miller. Introducing the industry to new types of nutrition supplements for athletes. G-BioSports handbook stresses the companys desire to exceed competition expectations through exercising fairness and upholding ethical decisions. The core values focus on working as a team, valuing customer feedback, maintaining accountability for actions, self improvement while demonstrating human dignity and respect. Solving an ethical dilemma takes practice: highlighting the facts, establishing primary stakeholders, distributing fairness, fulfilling all responsibilities, developing an equilibrium, sharing decisions, and double checking the result.
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) standards were below the minimum requirements held by G-BioSport. A small trace of contamination was found three weeks after shipments left the company. As the Quality Control Manager (QCM), my job is to maintain the high product standards of the company.
In the first simulation, the dilemma was whether to pull the product in the form of a recall, or warn consumers of the contaminant, and how? My first response was to recall the product to protect the community from possible harm; although slim chances of harm exist. However, the simulation shows that my decision was not in the best interest of the company and warning the public was a sufficient solution. According to the right and responsibility lens, my response should cover all the stakeholders to exercise my proper duties. Supplying information to consumers will allow them to make their own decision while maintaining the companys position to uphold honesty to consumers; thus, preventing additional strain on the company. Furthermore, showing a concern of public safety while reducing the companys liability. Identifying all the stakeholders is the key to exercising ethical thinking (University of Phoenix, 2011, Week Four Simulation).
Looking at the dilemma through the rights and responsibilities lens means to act in an ethical manner that coincides with following duties, rights, and justice for others. The best solution applying this behavior was allowing consumers the right to make choices. On the other hand, the result lens bases decisions on the utilitarianism; the best for the most (Brooks, 2007).
Using the results lens to determine the level of affects to each stakeholder were different from the options originally chosen. The choice to inform consumers of contaminant will affect the shareholders and Carson Nelson the highest. The consumers and QCM were at medium impacts. The lowest effects were the public relations director and the site operations manager. The results lens bases its thinking on the most beneficial for the most people. With this in mind, my results to determining all stakeholders fullest potential of happiness
