1. How, and by whom, is Corporate Social Responsibility defined in your country? (20 pts)
CSR is practiced by every leading organization in the country. But there is no governing body for ethics as such. There clearly are laws to be followed in the country but no such governing body for it alone. There is however a very prestigious award handed out for companies called the “Arabia Corporate Social Responsibility Award” based on Corporate Social Responsibility practices of the company.
2. How does that compare to generally accepted definitions of Corporate Social
Responsibility as described in your textbook and discussed in class? For example, where
is CSR in your country focused on relative to the CSR Hierarchy/ Pyramid? (10 pts)
CSR in the UAE is mostly reached ethical responsibilities. Companies do see and understand themselves as having a responsibility to do what is just, fair and right. A good example of this can be the fall in reputation of construction companies after their construction labour practices.
3. Provide an example of a company in your country that you believe is illustrative of a
good example of CSR in practice. Why did you specifically select this company? On what
basis did you make this decision? (20 points)
ABB UAE would be a company I consider a good example. They were applying CSR well before there was an award or any kind of recognition for having csr policies. In addition they were a runner up for the 2011 awards too. I chose ABB because they are involved in poverty alleviation, environment protection and climate change, humanitarian aids and community development. They are actively trying to be at the top of the CSR Pyramid. Their entire culture seems to revolve around that. Since the beginning their strategy has revolved around sustainability and being responsible to society. The words responsibility , governance, respect and integrity are used when talking about strategy, culture and their current businesses.
