In the years to come, quality office workers with good basic skills will continue to be in high demand. Employers in most organizations will seek out employees who have a good knowledge base in English grammar and usage, an ability to speak and write well, and accurate proofreading skills. Preference will be given to people who can think through a task, plan the best way to do it, and then complete it ably and skillfully.
Getting the job done in a cost-effective manner is a primary goal of all companies. Employees wanting to move up the ladder and advance in an office career must be efficient and productive. They must exhibit a good balance of skills. That is, office workers must be dependable, be able to work accurately under pressure, be very flexible in learning new things and ways of doing tasks, and be able to set priorities each days.
The effects of inflation are being noticed in the costs of producing a letter in todays office. In 1930 when the first study was conducted, the average cost of a typical business letter was 29 cents. As amazing as it may seem, due to spiraling salaries and specialized equipment, a letter that cost about $7.60 in 1983 cost $10.26 in 1989.
Postage (like spiraling salaries and the cost of specialized equipment) has kept rising over the years, another factor related to the expense of a letter. In 30 years, the cost of mailing a first-class letter jumped from 4 cents in 1960 to 25 cents in 1990. The expense of transmitting a letter is one example of rising costs in todays offices.
